Can anyone tell me what year CC started using motors that were designed to run on lead free gas.?

What do you guys with older motors use.? Lead replacement gas aditives.?

Cheers,

I still use a lead substitute in my '87. Maybe I'm over-cautious, but IMO for $2 a tank, it's cheap prevention.

No leaded fuel here anymore...
We also have to use additives...

But then again my boat runs on propane . much cheaper!

My 85 454 gets a shot o' lead every fill up. I've been told that it also improves the octane.

Most ski boats here run on propane, because gas is expensive here (explained that somewhere on another thread)

None of them ever had a problem that I know of. Mine does so for more than ten years and never had a problem and runs like a swiss clock. You do loose a few HP tho.

Lead substitute additives = waste of money.

Kristof: You can get most or all of your HP back by increasing the compression ratio. Propane is the equivalent of about 110 octane gasoline, therefore compression could probably be increased to 11-12:1 without a problem.

Most of you are too young to remember the before leaded there was marine white gas. Straight run gas. nothing whatsoever in it. The engines ran fine.

Save the money you are spending for one of the chemical company scams for the good hardened parts or heads. The time will come when a top end job is needed and a so called lead substitute isn't going to prevent it.

Yep, For your Ford guys if your heads have the small spark plugs you've got hardened seats. Not sure what year that started but if you're putting that crap in a mid 80's boat it isn't neccesary.

Eric,
Unleaded gas was intruduced in Australia in about 1987. leaded Gas was phased out probably 10 years ago, and replaced with "lead replacement" gas, then that too was phased out a few years ago.

Kristoff, since you are pumping propane in its gas form, see if you could get a nitrous/propane mix, that would solve your HP problem jk just a thought

I recall my dad running Amoco White gas in our 1960 CC Starflite with Ford V8. He gained a couple of mph over the previous High Test.

Trying to compress nitrous and propane into a bottle...you just invented a diesel engine...can you say kaboom?

Would be cool if it would work though!

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't propane only have high octane rating when it's a liquid.? during the liquid / gas conversion process doesn't it drop right down.?

Here are my propane tanks... I will repaint them tho, otherwise Eric is gonna tell me I should watch "Brokeback Mountain" again

Oh , and I'm not too fond of kaboom's...
The loss of HP is aproximatly 5 HP... not worth a kaboom

Nowadays, there is a new system, called "LPI" or Liquid Propane Injection.
The propane is injected into the engine under high pressure.
The engine consumes less, no loss of HP anymore and better lubrication.

I was thinking again that when you use propane it gets cold, so why not run it thru a heatexchanger and fan, and you'll have a air conditioned boat

Sure sure, have a laugh at the little Belgian... But, I do love a good portion of BS from time to time.

Eric, I sure hope you won't do that when I have a transmission question, wouldn't want my boat to go backwards when I push the leaver forward

Thanks for the heads up 79Nautique and SN, I'll be more carefull with Eric(c) in the future LOL
