I have a new, orginial steering for my '86 Silver Nautique. Now, how do I remove the old one? I removed the nut but the wheel won't budge. There is a key but is it also tappered? Do I need a steering wheel puller?
The boat is in storage now but want to be ready to swap this out in spring. Thanks, Keith |

It should have a taper shaft with a keyway in it and a puller will help. I kinda yanked on mine and hit the keyway with a punch and it came off after letting it sit over night.

Keith, if you are around whenever, you are welcome to use my puller if you wish.

Thanks Jeff. Sounds like I'm going to need it. Don't want to damage anything trying to get the old wheel off.

You can rent those pullers from O'reilly's and Autozone for free. FYI, they do not double as a prop puller... trust me. Where'd you pick up the steering wheel at?

Not to step on Keith's toes here, but he found an original wheel on ebay. He had a non-original one on there from a previous owner.

Tim has it right as he found it for me. It's a new wheel (came still in the box) from eBay a few weeks ago. I bought it before the '93 wheel came up on eBay.
The old one is a two spoke Trellix. It looks very similar but is has two spokes instead of three. If anyone wants it, they can have it. Let me know. |

Now I need to see about finding a center cap cira 1986. MWCC has them but with the Nautique 'N'. I'll probably get that as a place holder but will be looking for the 'Correct Craft' center cap.

Paul,
I'll contact you off-line. Will need to wait until spring however as The Silver is now sleeping away the winter in a barn in ME. -Keith |
