Eric and other tranny guru's...

When checking the shaft seal last sunday, I noticed that, when the engine runs at idle (800 RPM) and the handle is in neutral, the shaft keeps turning slowly (plus minus one RPM per second). Is this normal? If not, how to fix this?

Thanks,
Kristof

How much would it cost to ship a trans from Belgium to Ohio?

Kristof, I think the slow rotation is normal. I see it all the time. Eric, Isn't some just caused by the oil shear between the plates?

A buddy of mine here said it could be due to the viscosity of the transmission oil...

But, Pete, it's good to hear that you've seen it also.

Eric, I don't know the brand, but my friend who's a marine mechanic and did the engine overhaul with me, said it's about the best stuff you can get on the market (that's because I damn well told him only the best is good enough for my baby!! )
He got the oil at the CC dealer here in Belgium.

You'd better have bolts left over after a rebuild. If not, it's probably because they were dropped in the intake or left in the oil pan. The only way to ensure this didn't happen is to have them left over.

Yes we do, Pete, we have three species of snakes (only one is dangerous)

Eric, I gave a call to my friend, and this is the oil I have in my tranny at the moment:

Kroon Oils
I hope it will get your approval

how bad is it spinning? does it want to stall when you put the boat in reverse? it really shouldnt spin at all and is refered to as a clean nuetral.
how many hours? how does the oil smell and look?

Thanks for all the insight. the prop spins one to two revolutions a second, yet I can stop it by hand... the fly wheel that is.

The trans fluid was black to dark dark red. Lots of hours over 1k. didnt smell.

I drained the fluid, put in new fluid w an evil additive.   It seems to slow it down a little. The reverse seems like a fast and abrupt transition... from fwd, to reverse - very strong and powerful reverse. The PO said it had been that way for a long time... thanks for telling me now.

Hope to get my cables put back properly into my shifter.

I know this is off topic, but I cant remember how the levers in the inside of the shifter arm were arranged?

such a newbie.... keen though,
jamie

alot of times when they slam into gear such as into reverse, the reverse return springs will weaken and the piston shoots out and grabs the plates, this is one of the primary causes for snaping reverse plates in half, it sounds like you can get another season with no major problem, but if the nuetral drag gets worse you have to take care of it, at least for safety reasons
