Hey Gang-
Here's a good one for you... Has anyone ever tried or is it possible to convert a outboard tachometer to a inboard tach? This is for a 351 commmander. Both guages are 78' vintage teleflex with 6000 rpms. Thanks- NM |

I Think its the number of cylinders and 2 or 4 stroke thats important for the tach to read. So wouldn't a tach read the same hooked up to a 4 cyl 2 stroke as a 8 cyl 4 stroke? Pete

Mike, 4/ strokes read pulses or counts at the coil,8 pulses = one RPM on a v-8 and signal wire hooks to the coil. a 2/stroke reads pulses or counts the poles on the flywheel,6 magnets=12 poles,4 magnets=8 poles, and the signal wire hooks to the rect/regulator. the newer tachs will go both ways,2 or 4 stroke. hook it up and see ,you wont let the smoke out ,it just wont read correctly....... boat dr

No they wil not read the same. If it was a lter model outboard that was of a four stroke design and was capable of switching to 8 cyl then it would but since there weren't any four strokes in the 70"s your SOL.

If the tach has switches on back, you can set it to 4.4 pulses per rev on a v8 4 stroke.I don't see a problem if it has switches for different applications
Good luck Munday |

if it is designed for a 2 stroke motor it will not work for a 4 stroke motor and vise versa 4-2 regardless if it has a switch or not.

if you did that then it will read twice as fast as your going since there needs to be one pulse per cyclinder. |
