Got started winterizing 1997 ski nautique GT40 EFI. Changed the transmission fluid, looked good. Started up & put into gear at low rpm & have a rattle in the transmission. If you speed up the rpm the rattle seems to quiet down. Worked great all summer, did add a little fluid during the summer but felt was normal. Prop is tight seems smooth when turn prop by hand. Never ran the prop out of the water before. Should that make a difference? Do I have a start of a tranny issue?

What's the RPM's? Was it out of the water and did you lubricate the cutlass bearing? The next step would be to check the dampner.

Was out of the water. Rpm's 900 to 1,200 made noise. RMP's up to 1,800 was less noise. I did not notice anything when it was in the water. I didn't lubricate any bearing. Not sure what the dampner is?

They all do the same thing out of the water without the load. I remember the same noise after doing a flush on my trans from 20wt oil to Dextron III. Eric said to put it in and out of fwd and reverse a couple of times to activate fluid in pump body.

I think Pete is trying to say you need to lubricate the cutless bearing if running out of the water.
If you're going through hell, keep going
