Can I remove the epoxy ball from the alternator output lead on my 1976 Mustang OMC?

I don't feel that's an "epoxy ball". OMC uses a diode spliced into the output to prevent a parasitic discharge. Why do you want to remove it???

According to my parts manual, it is a 60amp fuse..
While trouble shooting the voltage regulator, I sent battery voltage to alternator field and the ball had a slight melt down.

Terry,
Do you have the wiring diagram? Your parts manual may list a fuse but not a location? I still feel the part is a diode. There's actually a thread on the OMC diode someplace. I'll go searching. Why the troubleshooting? What was going on?

My battery stopped charging. I measure only 12.5v when running above idle. When running my amp meter (not a voltmeter) reads 0 or slight discharge. That ball device is on the output from the alternator to battery lead on the starter solenoid, not the vreg output to field.. It would make more sense to me if it were a fuse. I would include a pic of it if I were up at my camp. I will include in a day or 2.

It looks like this ball https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0383432

I found a new one on eBay

$20 delivered, can't beat it!

I guess it is a fusible link of sorts.

Thanx Pete!

New voltage regulator and fusible link did the trick. Great boating day yesterday
