Bruce, I hope you had the oil dry handy!!
This is a picture of the riser that you should have on your 6. It sure would be helpfull with solving your 90 degree exhaust hose problem. It's from this thread: 65 mustang |

Bruce, The Barr elbow is in this thread:
exhaust hose It's about 3/4 of the way down the page. Keep in mind that I mentioned that the rubber elbows from West are 3" and not the 2-1/2" that you need. That's why I went looking for a 2-1/2 you could use. Steve's (62 wood) manifold has the downward bend in his manifold as well. I wonder how you ended up with the straight? The bent riser sure would be nice if you were able to find one. You mentioned that you thought that you had a larger V8 dog house. Do you think this boat has been re powered at one time hence the wrong riser? |

Two of those would be perfect. I'd really rather not get into messing with that riser, although it would allow me to change that little hose between the riser and the thermostat housing.

Bruce, Check with Steve on that little hose. With his thermostat problems at Green lake, I think he had it on and off about 20 times!!!! You remove the thermostat housing.
I feel you would only need 1 elbow to make the turn down before the hose hits the dog house. The exhaust hose itself will make the second bend towards the stern in the bilge. |

Thanks Tim, I'll keep that in mind as a last resort because that would really eat into my budget. But, if I get fed up with this old technology and decide to go with a new PCM 5.7...

Yes it did and i already have it apart, its not in to bad of shape, the reverse band is in great shape and all the hard parts also are in good shape, I wish i had a source for the seals and gaskets, I hate making gaskets, all in all it is a good rebuildable transmission and we will not need bee doctors core. I also should be able to make the broken stee line and probably will be done with the trans in the next couple of weeks

Great news! Thanks. Don't they take Ford O Matic parts? (if they even make them any more?)

Eric, Don't worry about painting it. I'll paint it afetr I install it and paint the engine. 62Wood used a GM paint on his that looks like a nice Ford blue. I didn't ship it with the trans because I was worried that the spray can might not ship well.

thanks Pete, I'll give them a call on Moanday and shoot the sht with them, some of the internals are identical to the Merc II trans made by Mercury, all taken from the ford FMX transmissions. the plates are the same as Borg warners, paragons, Fords
By looking at this transmssion which is a little different than the last one i did, the bolt pattern to the bellhousing is the same as a BW and the stack-up is pretty close to them also, it does use a 4" coupling and for future reference if someone wanted to go to a BW it would be an easy conversion, though you would have to go with thwe BW 26 spline input shaft drive plate |

Eric, I don't plan to repower this boat. I'm staying with the 100 hp 6. I'm assuming rebuilding is the best way to go rather than converting to a BW? What are the advantages to the BW?
If Pete's friends have the gasket that I will need to reinstall the tranny, could you get one of those? |

Eric, I found a pic of the tranny that shows the lines. I plan on replacing them with SS or rubber.

Should be a couple of weeks. Then I've got a few more things to take apart. Then I start the floor.

I had to fly in a specialist for this one..
Pete fyi, this one does have its own oil pump, it doesnt run off of the engine oil pump and with a few changes Bruce could get a Borg warner in place of it if ever needed |

prime it and throw some paint on it, just tape off the seals and connectors first.

Bruce, Lookin good!! I too think you should paint it when you paint the engine. It will be more original plus, it looks good now but it does need some protection. Even though your not in salt water, I feel you will get some white rusting on it.

I'm going to paint it after I mount it on the engine. What I'm thinking right now is that I'm going to mount it and start the engine while it's still in the boat. That way I can make sure the engine and tranny are working ok. I'm then going to remove the engine to do the floor work in the boat and detail the engine.

use a self etching zinc or primer so it bites into the raw aluminum, for some reason paint hates sticking to the aluminum and will chip and crack easily
