hey gang,
I'm looking for an assist. I'm looking at a boat in the LA area and wondering if there's anyone around there who would be willing to put eyes on it, or pick it up for me, or maybe even store it for a few weeks. My first thought was BKHallpass just as a Cali boy, but then I looked at a map, and it turns out California's a big state. I'm hoping somebody a little more local is willing to lend a hand. For those of you who don't know me, I recently moved from Cleveland to Australia, and I'm looking for a boat to ship over. Being halfway around the world is going to make this challenging, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Probably not back for at least a month. Unfortunately I don't know boat guys down here. Use to be a few on the site but I'm not sure any more.

Adam what boat are you looking to import???
In your situation of having no where to work on making the trailer meet Australian compliance laws I would use the RORO instead of container. This way at least the trailer will be in one piece when it arrives. Make sure you get a DOTARS Import Permit for the trailer. Otherwise they will impound trailer at dock and you may never see it again. |

I've actually got a plan for that Mark. I met a guy who owns a business importing boats. he does the whole thing- axles, fenders, tower, windshield...he does about 150 a year so I trust he knows what he's doing.

Sounds good Adam. The whole Australian compliance deal is a PIA. It was made even more difficult by the local trailer manufacturers lobbying the Government to make it even harder.
This is how they fit boat and trailer in the container... |

Adam,
Can you tell me specifically where this boat is located? I'm trying to figure out if I know someone that can help you. I could take several hours to drive across what outsiders call Los Angeles. I've had conversations with folks about "LA" where they were referring to Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino Counties. Some even go so far as San Diego, Kern, or Santa Barbara. San Bernardino is the largest county in the continental U.S. and it can take a few hours just to drive across the City of Los Angeles in commute traffic. You get the idea. Let me know what city the boat is in and I'll try to figure out who I know. BKH |

That's getting pretty far inland. About 60 miles from where I usually visit on business, but it could take 3 or 4 hours at the wrong time of day. Need to think about someone who dose their boating at Lake Arrowhead. None coming to mind right now. I'll keep thinking on it.

Adam,
I've got a buddy in Yucca Valley which is pretty close but he's not a boat guy- more of a bike guy. It's a bit of a long shot. If you don't find anyone let me know and I'll see what I can do. -Brad |

Adam when you mention transporting and importing to Australia it can scare off some sellers thinking it is a scam. I wait till the deal is almost done before I bring up this matter.

Brian, I'm flying in to Santa Ana Tuesday the 18th, then have to be in Vegas Wednesday morning. I was thinking of driving, being that I need a car for Wednesday's business. Might this be a mistake to drive? I'll be able to roll out of Santa Ana around 3:00pm. I've never been to CA, and thought it would be a cool, albeit hotter than h.., drive. Any thoughts? Thanks, Steve |

I suppose if you've never driven across a desert, it might be worthwhile. Personally, I'd rather be sitting in a bar in Las Vegas, taking in the sites, if you know what I mean. I'm not a gambler, but plenty to see in LV.
By 3pm traffic will already be getting heavy. A lot of people live out in Riverside or San Bernardino and commute into LA or OC, because of the high cost of living as you move west. It's a four hour drive with zero traffic. At that time of day, the first 60 miles could take three hours. You might get lucky. But, I know there are some freeway construction zones on that route. The last 210 miles not much to see. Highway 15 is South of Death Valley, North of Joshua Tree, and North of Palm Springs. Plenty of drives in CA that I would say absolutely go for it. Driving 15 from OC to LV would not be one of those. My $.02 BKH |

Post Script. Depending upon how gracious you are feeling, you would be driving right by the location where Adam needs someone to check out a boat.
