Since the boat's all torn apart and the engine is on a wooden storage stand or whatever, I kinda figure that if you can run it for 10 minutes or so on the stand with cooling water, that would be a good idea, then recheck the compression dry and wet to see if there were any changes.
Or somebody will tell you to go high tech and do a leak down test but either will tell you what you want to know You also have that mystery oil leak under the bell housing to find so this would give you that opportunity also. And if the transmission is still hooked up you can exercise that also It's an old engine with a 2 piece rear main seal, so you're getting into the bottom end of the engine anyways if you have to replace that seal Or you could decide it's too much trouble to do all this and that a rebuild is needed but you've never seen it run yet so I'd give running it a shot |

Will the spoonful of oil in the spk plg hole not mess up the compression tester? Or do you put it in crank a bit to blow out the excess and then hook up the tester? Assume any oil is fine? We have 15w50 on hand I am sure.

Whatever you have on hand will work and the oil won't mess up the compression tester.
I use a little oil squirt can to get the oil into the cylinder and try to distribute it around the cylinder as much as I can. You'll find various different things written saying to use a teaspoon and others saying to use a tablespoon. I checked with Betty Crocker and 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons or 1/2 of an ounce of oil. There's nothing real scientific about this, you just want the oil to give a better seal on top of the rings and see how much the compression changes. The can in the picture takes 9 squirts to get a tablespoon into the cylinder and the flexible hose works pretty good to distribute the oil around. the cylinder/piston top How much you use is up to you, but I use close to a tablespoon on a low cylinder(s) like you have |

This project is all over the place. We sanded a lot more on the gel. Used DA sanders with 80grit. We still aren’t getting through this gel. The paper could suck. Making lots of dust but not getting to glass. 36 grit? Will buy 3m this time. Is there special sand paper? Are we using the wrong tool. Frustrating to say the least. On another boat (junk) we sanded through the gel with 150. This is much thicker. Any advice is welcome.
In other news we got title to the trailer and are planning to have it sandblasted and painted. Will go under the tique for now. Anyone looking for an old #2 trailer? It is our tique trailer. Was wrecked and tongue modified a bit but it runs true. If any interest we can talk off line. |

Not for nothing but thats why I figured that gel should be restored... in cases where the gel is cracked so badly it all has to go sand paper on a da has never worked for me... belt Sanders and flap disks on grinders followed by a lot of work to get it back flat after is what I have had to do... |

This gel is not cracked. The gel is good. Just had color issues. That said I hear you on getting more aggressive. Thanks.

Post aggression there will likely then be the need for body filler, and primer before the reapplication of gel - then some wet sanding to flatten the gel. You could chose to paint from here - it wouldn't be gel but if the gel is in good shape and will be a good substrate a high quality self leveling paint involves a whole lot less work. - just an option |

And to continue the saga...hopefully get some work done this winter. I'll start with some pics of where we have been (since pics were deleted from the site).
1972 Skier project
Fixed the tires and bearings, took her to the shop, and stripped her. Boat gel had been worked on as shown in prev pic. Started wet sanding entire boat to match...couldn't get the gel to cooperate so we decided to sand and re-gel: Flipped the boat and filled in dings and nicks with vinylester. This boat had snaps for a cover which were also removed and holes filled. The boat is flipped and on a stand we built. Attached to the stringers. Sanded the boat down to 150, were ready to spray gel and we were warned that we prob needed to sand more. Sanded down more with 40 grit until we started getting through the gel in multiple places. While it doesn't show well in this pic below the gel is very thin and glass is starting to show through. And where we are now...brought the hull to Winston Salem last month to go to a paint booth for us to shoot gel. We ordered the orange color that is directly below the color "tan" It was a great match and is called "Tangerine" Took the boat to a friends shop with a paint booth but had trouble spraying gel due to temp. We shot test panels in the summer and had good luck. Unfortunately our friends shop was not warm enough and we were getting poor results so we took it to a pro with a heated shop. He shot the boat last week and it is looking good. Now it is in the driveway waiting to be sanded and buffed. Then stringers and floor, then the top deck gel etc. If anyone wants to sand...just let us know! |

Started acetoning the boat and sanded the transom with 320 as recommended by the glass shop who sprayed. I used a light mist of black spray paint on the transom before I sanded to see where I was going and to see that I got any orange peel flat. Question: what is the actual product/process called when you color the gel before sanding? Thanks!

Got started on sanding with the 320. Still a ways to go but it is looking good when it rains like today. Knocking off the orange peel is tough to hit all spots...once 320 is done the remaining grits should move a lot easier and faster.

Tough crowd...no one came to sand or buff . Got done sanding over the weekend and compounding and polishing the past two days. It turned out pretty well thus far I think. Next up we plan to take the hull back to the farm to be waxed fri night while having a few cold snacks and flipped on sat morning with the help of a few fellow ccfans. Then the fun begins...cutting out stringers and grinding. Stay tuned.
Sanded: Half compounded: Compounded and polished: |

Had a good weekend working on the skier at the farm. Got the bottom waxed and ready to flip Fri night. Sat morning we had Greg F., Cousin Donald, Chad and Allen to help us flip (Thanks!). Went well with no damage. A few places on one chine to buff out where we tried to protect from the straps and failed but a little sanding already has it smooth. Will have to compound a bit. The below link shows the flip:
Pre-flip Post flip Then came cutting out the stringers and foam. Got a good ways but will take another day...then the grinding can begin. Used a 4.5" angle grinder with a cutting wheel to cut the fiberglass. Used a recip saw with a long demo blade to cut the foam to get it to pop out easier with a crow bar. Quite a bit of rot. Like the last boat, the stb was more rotten than the port. |

Originally when we couldn’t get the stripes out of the gel via wet sanding, we decided we wanted to make sure we could get the hull looking right before spending the time and money on the rest. Ideally we would have done the inside first and the gel last.
