Thanks Joe, for stepping up and saving her it’s a great boat many will now see and admire one of Correct Craft’s coolest boats and well before fiberglass Riva in 69 that don’t come close.Clap

A great start to the week after a bank holiday.. but I am jealous now.Stern Smile

Got curious, so started digging.  Was this one of those early whispers? (click on second half only...for some reason)

I doubt it would have been the same boat - as this one never needed a complete restoration- and was owned by an Albert at that time who thought it was the greatest boat ever and in pristine shape- although one can never tell- so perhaps more than one is out there - or it was just a scammer offering a unicorn to get a response. Before my ccfan days either way.

That's a great story Joe, enjoyed it and especially all the pictures.  Very cool find.

It's possible you need a bigger barn ....

That is about as cool as it gets right there,  glad it ended up in the right hands. There can't be too many unique boats like that left hiding in barns.

Joe,

She is truly a special boat and a true time capsule.  It got into the right guy's hands to keep in its glory for many more years to come. I feel grateful that I got to see this special boat in person.

Definitely looks like this rudder was previously repaired and living on borrowed time… as brought up by Larry separately we are still down several brochures- including the 1965 stuff that had the best description of this boat and options. I would be happy to pay for a hard copy of that documentation or even any recovered electronic versions- anyone?

Question on the engine ... so it's a 427 FE with higher compression than the other models, but I'm surprised they could get to 400 hp just with the compression.  Any other mods to it besides the dual carbs?  I saw a few posts referencing that the engines were also put in Higgins, also with a no-warranty clause.

Any idea how much hp the 1:1 transmissions can handle?

I know you said you had a donor rudder in your garage already, but a high performance boat like that warrants a high performance rudder, so here you go.  You can thank me later.

Be harder to figure out how they only got 325 out of the other 427 interceptor offered that year.   63-64 427s were rated in cars at 425 with duals and 410 with a single. Later marine 427s were rated at 300hp but were lower compression and used the 352 heads. This motor has the low port 427 heads that would have been expected for 64 in the car or crate engines, likely low to mid 11s compression, solid lifter cam, dual point distributor, etc to support good torque and the ability to carry it higher into the revs. It’s a short stroke engine so rpm is it’s friend. The transmission is limited by torque and good for 595 ft lbs in this application- this motor would likely be under 480.

Thanks, I'll do some more Ford FE reading so I can better understand all that.

If compression is 11 plus, can you even run on 93 octane?

It seems to run - seriously it does seem to run, you have to watch it and run on 93 - I’m adding a bit of lead replacement additive for valve wear purposes- so far haven’t touched the tune and haven’t heard any pinging.   I will put a modem prop on it which will have it under less Load - but it’s a watch and see situation. If I denote any hints I’d detonation there will be some timing pulled out and/or jets increased- but I suspect it’ll run on 93 ok. There is a similar compression 413 Chrysler in my Wildcat and it’s taken all the 93 octane abuse you can imagine- including teenagers who don’t pay for the gas

Well - no brochure’s but the trade magazines of the time have some record of the availability of the boat - as well as race results from other boat manufacturers running 400hp interceptors- including Don Aronow capturing overall victory’s in a twin engine formula

$8565 was huge money in 1965.  I believe a loaded 1965 427 Corvette was in the $5s. and a price sheet I have of a 427 Shelby Cobra in 1967 was about $6500.

Loved watching the videos.  Sounds perfect to me, what an amazing boat you have there.

Tried to stop the on-plane video and see the gauges.  The Airguide seemed to be working, only said 20 so maybe you were more like 25 mph?  Tach must be off, I think only reading a bit over 1000 rpm, though sounded like the engine was just purring along holding it on plane.  Can't wait to see you wind that thing up with the new rudder and prop.

I sold a boat last summer, find I'm just using the '98 Sport and never getting in the other ones in recent years.  Watching this gives me a hankering for another classic!

I like these big boats (19 and 20 footers) for classic cruisers - this one maybe a bit too nice for everyday teenager, swimming, parasail pulling, bring the dog along use - but I have been using the wildcat for that type of use for the last 5 years or so and it is well suited to it.   My 196 really only gets cruising use when the heater is needed. These are still flat bottom boats but the extra freeboard and flared bows allow a drier ride over the mustangs/cudas/ski nautiques.

I have barely used my '63 over the past years, in fact haven't kept it up the way I should.  I've thought about moving on from it, kind of part of the family but if I put it in the water it gets a few trips, we enjoy it and get some nice waves from people, but that's it.  Too small and limited for anything but an evening cruise.  So I've thought about exactly what you have, a 19' or larger.  If you remember I was really interested in your 426 as such an unusual setup, but this one of course takes the cake.

For a while I thought about a Dominique just to get the advantage of the V-hull, but doesn't compare to the Wildcat etc. from a style standpoint.  I guess for now I'll just keep thinking about it. Smile

If ever there was a retro era setup rolling down the highway, that would be it.  Just need a surfboard on top of the van, maybe some bellbottom jeans.  And I'd strongly consider painting a flower onto the hood and tailgate of the van.  Slap some Grateful Dead into the 8-track and roll on down the road!

I did some fighting with the rudder port to get it out - biggest issue was previous hits had made the portion extending past the hull too big and misshapen to remove. In the end I had to cut it flush and eventually saws all through the center of the tube to make it go through with minimal hammering.

Pictures show getting it to the driveway and eventually completed with replacement port and rudder, I also aligned the motor/trans, added a two piece shaft collar, and swapped to an acme 431 13x13 lh prop from the 13x17 federal that was on there.

As a result of the prop change - the front seat pulled out of the floor - so rusty screws had to be replaced with more and bigger screws. Still not a 50mph boat but as close as it gets. Did put a few hours on the boat between Saturday night and Sunday - so it’s up to 440 now so about 7.5 per year on average. See if we can’t get that to double digits by the time she’s 62.

I think by the site bylaws you can round 49.9 up to 50 and call it a 50 mph boat.

That sounds great, and pretty well wound out.  With that speed and prop would have to be in the 5000's, wouldn't it?

I’ve got no reason to round up - this one is just my money not my design or my perspiration - but I would have thought for the amount of effort and cost they put in in 64 it would be 52ish.   That speed and prop the bfn guys tell me would be 4990 rpm.   The wildcat with analogous prop runs 46 ish at 4800 ish rpm iirc - that might mean this is closer to 5200 than 4990. I would be happy with that - anything under 5k and i probably need to at least try a tube up.
