Anyone know why one side would be bright and one side dim?

Could be bad ground on the light...what do the lights do when you put a turn signal on?

Or corroded terminal? Try wiggling the connector plug?....Does the lense come off the light? Try wiggling the bulb?

may sound silly but the bulb could be rotated 180 degrees so the brake light fillament is lighting up on that one side

doesn't work that way on the bulbs they are keyed and cannot be reversed so that the brake light element works when the parking lights are on. Make sure they have the correct bulb installed and some times the inside of the lens can have a film on it to look like it's dimmer.

Turn the hazzards on and look and see if the side that is dim actually flashes they could have a single element 1156 instead of a dual element 1157 bulb.

i beg to differ. on some of the crappier boat trailer light sets the little collar that is supposed to prevent improper installation is mis shapen and will allow the bulb to be installed wrong.

It is a DHM trailer and the whole side is dim while the other side is bright. And when I hit the brake the tail lights go out. Anyhing I should try?

I don't know what cheap sh*t you've seen that has a collar on the light bulb because I've never seen one ever and this isn't a head lamp. The difference is in the two tangs on the side of the bulb on one style they are in line on the other style they are stagered and if you have had some jackass force the wrong bulb into the wrong socket then the socket's screwed up now as well as the idiot that did it.

Pull the bulbs and make sure one isn't burnt out, that can kill the curcuit since most are in series, and double check the tow vehicles lights for burnt out bulbs as well, unplug the harness if need to do that. Your next step is going to be tracing the wiring back and looking for splices.

If I test each light should it test 12V when I test the wire at each light?

yes, put you have to probe the contacts in the base of the socket, the socket it's self is the ground and there should be two contacts, one for the low power element, tail light, and the other is the high power element or brake/turn both should have 12v or pretty close to it.

Lets back up. When you say 1 side bright and one side dim, are you referring to the running lights?
Also, when you mash the brakes the lights go out?... are you referring to the running lights?

Aaron replace the bulbs and it most likely will fix your problem if you haven't already done that. It will save you some time missing with the test light and if they are goos then you have some spasres to throw in the glove box. Your statment about the light's going out when appling the brakes is a clear sign of a bad light bulb.

My two tail lights show 12V, and the side lights show 2 volts.
