First trip out after replacing the steering cable in my 97 sport I noticed vibration at high rpms.
After doing some reading I thought it might be the prop but my prop looks perfect. I turned the prop by hand out of the water and see/feel no issues or binding there. However the rudder has a lot of play both side to side and front to back. I am sure it is time to repack it anyway, but could the play be causing the vibration?

Jonathan,
You will not be able to tell if a prop is out of balance just looking at it. A prop shop needs to set it up and check it. The other issue may be the shaft itself. A dial indicator will tell. .003" is the max run out. I have seen shafts turn easy but due to the cutlass being worn. Gave you checked your alignment?

I do not think it's your rudder. Re-pack the port and see if it makes a difference.

I agree with you. I just was hoping to not have to order a new prop. There is one prop shop in the whole state of Montana, not anywhere near me. I am planning on repacking the rudder this weekend and bit the bullet and ordered a new prop. When I get the new one, I will send the old one off to have it balanced. $$$$$$

I'd work on your loose rudder first. Something is not right. I don't think you should be able to move the rudder side to side at all.

Have you greased your rudder recently? It should have a little zerk fitting on the rudder port. I've noticed that seems to remove some of the play.

Or course, if you're going to repack it anyway, the extra grease might be a bigger mess for you to deal with.

No zerk on this one.   I will repack it all this weekend and grease it all up. Plus getting the prop will hopefully make all this go away. Just hope its not the shaft.

Just to close this out. I got a new prop but also noticed that my shaft packing was very much out of adjustment. Repacked the shaft and rudder and new acme 654 prop on and no vibrations.   haven't had a chance to put the old one back on to notice any differences.

Yep sure feels good to get it fixed and learn something in the process. (Not sure how I got that double post up above though)
