I just did a search since the basic wiring diagram (by Tim) has been posted many times. The search feature is a great tool as long as you enter the proper key word(s).

wiring diagram

Welcome to CCfan. Tell us more about the boat and of course we love pictures.

Sounds like you have a electrical project??

Here's a older version that's out of the manual in the reference section. That section is a great tool as well. Do some exploring of the site when you get a chance. You will not fine another like it!!

I just bought the boat about 3 months ago and have loved every minute of it. However not knowing boat alternators do not produce many amps I installed a system without upgrading and the alternator went out. So I figured I should go through the wiring and check it while I am there. Do you know what the aux wire on the alternator is for?

You need to give us more info. Did you get a one wire alternator or the older style? The older will have the "exciter" wire. It actually senses the charging needs. Is that the "aux" wire you are referring to? Didn't the new alternator come with instructions? I hope you bought a ignition protected marine alternator.

What "system" did you install that the OEM alternator couldn't handle? How's the battery? Hopefully it's not a deep cycle.

I bought a direct replacement old style marine alternator with external regulator. It has 4 wires on it,charge wire, field wire, ground and aux. Battery is a good srm 2r interstate battery. My stereo is a total o f 9 speakers. 1 12 inch sub,4 6.5 polk db tower speakers 2 6.5 onboard and 2 six by nines. 2 amps installed powering everything totalling around 1800 watts. The alternator I bought was remaned by Texas alternator. No box and no instructions so I hooked it up the same way the old one was. It didn't work from the moment I installed it.

Take another look at the older wiring diagram I posted above. It shows the 4 wires including the "aux".

Hi there
Question, I just bought a new battery and now my 35 amp alternator will not keep it charged. I noticed in your post "hopefully its not a deep cycle"? I bought a battery that has the side posts for my system and top posts for the boat and the salesman said it is comparable to a deep cycle marine battery? Is there a reason not to use those?

The reason you don't wanna use a deep cycle battery as your starting battery is because they don't produce enough cracking amps and you can over heat your starter or starter solenoid.

You should also check and see if your alternator is producing voltage.

Side post or top post doesn't really matter as long as it is not a deep cycle battery. You want a battery with about 650 cca.
