I have a petronix electronic ignition upgrade in my distributor, does this void the need to check dwell?

yes, no points no dwell to set, but you still have to set the base timing and verify the mechanical advance is working correctly. Also Read the installation instruction and verify the need to remove or use the ballast resistor per the instructions.
