Frank, I'd like to buy the chrome steering wheel base if it's in decent shape.

Thats a good find Marty, I always marvel at the things you turn up. It's a little on the small side tho, but maybe someone here could use it.

I have one of these wheels, was going to use it on another project, but am not that picky, just looking for something interesting from the same period. This wheel will need some restoration but is usable. Let me know if you have something to trade or what it is worth to you.

Steve,
Do you have or have you seen one of the vinyl repair kits? The ones that come with the paste you spread in the rip and then overlay a textured plastic sheet to match the "grain"? Try pressing the graining sheet into the uncured adhesive and fair it out at the edges. (on some scrap first!!!)

What are you using for adhesive? 3M makes some for difficult to bond plastics.

I can attest to what Pete is saying....very time consuming. Ive been working on the original wheel for my 64. About a third of the mounting hub was comletely missing. Heres where the project has been at for a few months ....

Thanks for the tips Pete.
My 1st problem is that I do not have a wheel to repair or restore.
I was hoping that one of these shops would have one laying around.
Still searching ebay and will keep my eyes open.

Roger,
A alternate to injection molding new plastic around the core is just repairing the existing. I've done a couple wheels by just routing out the cracks, filling them with epoxy, sanding off the excess and then painting.

Yes, just as Bruce said, wheel restoration by a pro with kill you!!

Roger, I've got a feeling the price on a restored wheel would knock you off your seat. Keep looking, one will turn up. You may have to buy an old boat, but one will turn up.

Got as note back from the Restoration folks. They say that it is a
57 Mercury Deluxe.
The bad news is that they said that they have to have a core.

Another 66 Barracuda owner and I have been talking about this steering wheel.... he has one but I don't.
He mentioned the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser but I noticed that that wheel
has a flat top section. The rest of it looks identical. This is a
picture from a 1957-1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser reference.

Was there a different steering wheel used in 1959 that is round ?

Roger, that would be great. I really like those mahogany Barracudas and from the pics you posted when you first got it, it looked like it was buffing out really nice.

Gary, I'll know that wheel, too, and will keep an eye out. They started putting those on the Barracuds as early as '68. They must have run out of the old Merc wheels. Those old Merc wheels turn grey when they get weathered.

Roger,
The wheel is from a late 50's (58,59?) Mercury Turnpike Cruiser. I watch for them also. Ive seen a few, but been a while since Ive seen one. Is your wheel missing?

FYI...I think the center cap CC used is also the Mercury Crest...cheapskates!

Bruce, I actually took pictures and started a thread but did not keep it updated. I may go back and update it with all the pictures I took. Would be fun to see it in a series of pictures in the thread. Maybe I
can get it done this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.

Gary, I have sent a note to the site you provided and will see what they
come up with.

Roger, I think someone here (Steve,62wood)? said that these were off of a 50's Mercury car. If he see's this I'm sure he'll chime in. Then try these guy's quality restorations they say they have "hundreds" of wheels in stock.

And Bruce if you come across one of these, like The Godfathers let me know

Roger,

I searched hard for one a few years ago, (no luck) I think you will find its a late 50's / early 60's mercury wheel. Keep looking on ebay.

I have wanted to get current pictures and get them uploaded to the Diaries but everytime I think about it, it is cloudy or rainy.
I need to get it done.
