The Mercruiser 292 I6 GMs were rated at 200 or 205hp( I believe it depended on the year and they were only available for two or three years) and had 4V carbs and a hotter cam than the truck engine. They were torque monsters because it was basically a tall block 250 with a longer stroke. They came on a Mercruiser I setup and parts have been N/A for those for a long time. They had a raw water pickup through the hull and a raw water pump like an inboard and could be used in inboard applications. Like many inline Mercruisers the intake manifold incorporated into the exhaust manifold was raw water cooled to keep the charge very cool and dense. The Mercruiser 302 of this era was rated at 188hp and was much heavier. IMHO I believe the twin 292s would perform better than 302s but it's hard to beat a 350 or 351.
I am not aware of a 292 OMC, are you sure? Here is a Mercruiser / GM 292 in a 1970 Mark Twain in immaculate condition. I considered this boat before my Mustang but like an SN it was too big to pull much farther than the boat ramp with my car. In addition the inevitable engine swap when the Mercuriser I failed would be very expensive since it used a really big octagonal hole in the transom that would have to be reworked and new engine mounts glassed in. This was a solid 50mph boat and pulled very hard for an I/O.

I just got back from a ride,had to see if I in fact have a clock and no I do not. I remember seeing the pictures,one engine was either in a garage or shed

A T14 sure would look dinky parked next to that!

I keep expecting Tim Benjamin to bite on that boat however it takes a pretty good size trailer, truck, and workspace to handle that bad boy though. Only guy I know with that stuff already has too many big boats…   If anyone really wants to make it happen it is about an hour and a half from my house and I would be happy to help with logistics and be a stopover along the route.   Steve if it is only the hardtop that is stopping you I can have that thing removed and stowed in the nearest landfill before you could get yourself here to pick it up.

I'm not interested in a hardtop, but thought someone might have interest so here's the pics.

a little pricey, but has the 454 in it. Take away the pine needles, and it looks pretty good!
