I have a '89 Supreme with the standard 351. I cranked the boat last month for the first time in my driveway, but I noticed it took a while before it started circulating water. I used the old 5 gallon bucket method so it is easy to see the amount of water flow. I cranked it up again today (5 gal bucket) and there is no suction at all. I installed the new impeller and still no circulation (I marked the inlet, so I didnt reverse the direction). I even tried to prime it with the hose...nothing. It has an old Sherwood G21 pump that looks like it has seen better days. Is it time to fork out the $250 for a new one or are there any tricks I dont know about?

Thanks
JB

I forgot to add something...I have heard you can reverse the metal plate if it is badly worn..it was and I did flip it over. Should the impeller be rubbing firmly against the plate or barely touching? Is the impellers position on the shaft the key to creating suction? I have never torn down a pump, so I am new to this.

Thanks

Sounds like an air leak, only way it doesn't pump is air or impeller. The air may be a seal at shaft,a gasket or o-ring or any hose or fitting on suction side. The only other thing, and you said you have it right is the pump is spinning backward(mounted wrong) take off the discharge hose it should be spewing.

Thanks for the reply

The pump looks like it may be as old as the boat. The bearing feels loose, and I cant get it to pump water, so I bought a new one. Found a place on the internet that sells them for $189. I thought about trying to get it to work and keeping it as a backup...but I may just sell it to someone who can fix it.

The other way is that the woodruff key could have been left out upon reassembly.

Is the woodruff key the key that holds the impeller to the shaft? If so, it was fused to the shaft and I couldnt remove it. I was trying to take out the bearing and check out the interns of the pump.

Thanks

Remind me again..for the G20 & G21 Sherwood raw water pump left hand (normal) rotation engine, the proper direction is the cam screw towards the engine ..right?

Thanks

According to the manual, on 302 and 351 engines, the cam screw should face out (away from the block) on all PR engines and in (towards the block) on all PL engines. The Pleasurecraft engine serial tag tells you if it is right or left rotation. On the serial number, the letter after the "P" is either "R" (for right) or "L" (for left).
Hope this helps.

JB,

Check the diameter and width (width just as important) of the replacement impeller. If the width is too narrow then the new impeller will not work. I have a 1964 Model and it works great, but I have received the wrong impeller (my fault) and it was too narrow. I didn't notice the difference since I installed the new impeller after the winter. Once I determined it was not working, I had to go dig into the garage for the old impeller to compare. On this '64 model, the impeller pump is just behind the ski pole so it's not like you get a real good look into the guts of the unit and it's easy to assume that since the diameter is OK the width is also.

Don't worry about the rotation. The impeller will find it's way even when installed backwords.

It looks like I had it right. If anyone wants a old pump to rebuild it is on ebay. Thanks for the replies.
