What happens when you go to wimterize your boat, if it doesn't run long enough for the thermostat to open. Also is it hard to change a impeller on a GT-40.

Hopefully nothing if you drained the block correctly. When engines were allot simpler, we would never put antifreez in them. Just drain them. The opening of a themostat is to get the antifreez into the block. There is a small vent hole in the themostat so some antifreez may have gotten in.

Short answers:
No problem, anti-freeze still gets to where it needs to be. Thermostat controls how much water LEAVES the engine, not how much enters. No. |

So wouldn't that mean that the water sitting in the block never left and all the A/F got dumped out the exhaust?

Depends on which method he used. If he drained the block and refilled with antifreeze per PCM's instructions, then no, he would be fine. If he never drained the block and tried to suck up the antifreeze, then that could very well be the case. |

David, for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. For water/antifreeze to get in, it would have to displace the water that's already in there. Seems to me it the t-stat is closed, up suck up antifreeze, it's just going to get pumped out the exhaust.

You must drain the block BEFORE the antifreeze is added via the raw water pump outlet hose.
The cooling system is a recirculating closed system (until the thermostat opens) via the circulation pump. When the water reaches the temperature rating of the thermostat, it opens and lets hot water out which is replaced by cool water from the raw water pump. The thermostat regulates the flow of water exiting the engine to maintain the desire temperature. The circulation pump circulates the water within the block regardless of whether the thermostat is open or closed. Again, you MUST drain the block before adding the antifreeze when you winterize. Otherwise, the antifreeze is not going anywhere. |

I drained the block first, and took off the hose and started the engine until antifreeze came out the back. Also could someone tell me how to change the impeller?
