Certainly not for everyone... carpet is a nice classic look. Hydro Turf looks good too if you want the resto-mod look. All a winner in my book. Good luck with decisions!

looks good..BUT....still not sure I want to do that in my 93 SN, or go with the Carpet..I am thinking I like the looks of my "carpet" a bit more than the HydroTurf. Ah...decisions...decisions

Hydro Turf is finally installed! Below are pictures of the boat prepped, and then, installed. I was going to do a lot more prep work to work with the contact cement, but after some discussion, we decided to use another product to bond the materials. The contact cement does not allow for much error. We wanted to be able to shift the Hydro Turf sheets to match up the grooves as perfectly as possible. So, we used an alcohol based, water proof glue that allowed shifting of the sheets. Approved for all types of materials to bond. Cleaned the crap out of floors, put on an appropriate level of glue, and stuck the Hydro Turf on.
Everything went down really smooth. It was not a bad process at all. If we would have used contact cement, I am not sure we would have had the same results. I did not get any pictures of the actual install as it was all hands on deck and sticky stuff. In hindsight, I would have set up a camera to record all of it. Next time (hopefully not on my boat!)... I almost templated today but got sidetracked in gel coat repair. Maybe this weekend and hopefully in a week or so we will be putting it down. I will keep you posted. Brian |

The Martinique will be done at the canvas cover shop here at the end of the week (so they say). If I can pick that up on Friday/Saturday -- Hydro Turf will be cut and installed next week. I have a little more prep to do on the floors, but we are almost there! Getting pretty pumped for this install.
I will update once more info available. I will also update with pictures and notes regarding the process as they happen. |

That looks really good! Let me know how it lays down for you. Also curious to see if your batch of EVA foam is similar to what I've read in the reviews... I can't imagine there would be much deviation in color from batch to batch... but -- I have also never bought the stuff!
Good work! |

I have just finished the gelcoat of the floor and it wasn't as bad as you might think. Buy fairing compound from Totalboat. It has a nice open time and it is white so a little easier to work with. You mix it up like bondo and sands like bondo. Make sure it is the poly based stuff. After several coats and sanding I got a couple $15 sprayers from Harbor Freight and then sprayed black gelcoat down with the last coat containing a surfacing agent. I did not not know the best settings on the sprayer so there was a little orange peel but it ended up looking really good, I think.
I then bought several sheets of the EVA(SeaDek) from China. I have access to a 5 axis CNC and can make my own patterns and designs. So for ~$500 I can change out the pieces if they get worn out. If this goes as easy as I hope I might be able to do others if interested. I know Pete and Todd, SeaDek is trendy but when something better comes out I will be ready. :) |

Was*** lol!
It was very, very, very, very, nasty. Like I said, we had to be careful walking on it last summer. If you pivoted your foot at any spot while it was wet -- it would rip and tear. We were putting towels down on the floor before use as to try and help. Not an ideal situation. Right now, the old carpet is all torn out. I spent some time sanding off the old glue and now it just needs a good wash. From there, I will be filling low spots/painting some areas of the floor. I have been preoccupied the last few weeks with installing the rudder port/rudder and hooking all those components back up. Luckily that is done and well. Next project for me is cleaning/oiling the teak wood, filling/painting the floor areas, then will be doing the hydro turf. In all likelihood, I will be tackling this around mid-April. I do not have good ventilation in the garage where it is kept, and the contact cement seems like pretty nasty stuff. I need some warmer weather so I can open the doors and have some air circulating through. I will surely keep yinz updated as I start venturing into this. I also need to move the boat to a different part of the garage where I can have water to wash everything... There is currently a 32-foot camper blocking the garage door to get it moved... Don't have a 5th wheel to make the switch myself. This is the worst part of shared space. Once it all gets moved, everything should go right back up to speed! |

The sides on the Martinique are not perfect, but they are far from bad. I will take some good carpet cleaner to the blemishes and see if they will spruce up a bit. As for the floor carpet... It resembled more of roofing felt than carpet! When it would get wet, you had to be careful about stepping around on it or it had a high likelihood of ripping even more! Drying it out was a slow and painful process. It was one of those things that I didn't have time to fix when I bough the boat, I really wanted to use it last summer! And, so, we are now fixing it this winter.

do you have pics of your interior carpet or "before" pics? My boat is Maroon, grey(silver cloud) and white outside, with matching vinyl inside. My carpet on floor and on sides is a dark "silver cloud" grey"...I am going to leave the dark grey carpeted sides, as it looks damn near brand new..however the floor carpet is matted down, and starting to wear in spots.

Sounds like you do have the tools!
My boat is white with a black and red stripe on the side. Not sure if it was a bright white when new, but it is more of an eggshell color now. The floors were originally a gray carpet, and still will be on the sidewalls and seat box bases. As for the Hydro Turf, I went with the faux teak over black wide groove as pictured above. The Martinique has a ton of teak wood in it, so I thought this would look good with that as well. Pretty excited about this one coming together! |

Yeah, from years of laying mr own carpet, I do have carpet shears, and some heavy duty carpet cutting tools..so I'd imagine they'll cut the Hydro Turf as well. Can't wait to see your process.
what color is your boat, and what color turf are you going with? my carpet is grey, so I think if I do the Hydro Turf, I am going with the dark grey with black grooves. |

I'll let you know when I put it down. I've watched YouTube videos of people installing and it doesn't look too horrible. But, I also haven't had a sticky side on it yet, lol.
I have cut some pieces just to test it out. You need SHARP blades. This EVA foam dulls the utility knife blades in a hurry They also suggested a couple new pairs of scissors for doing a whole boat. Cutting with sharp scissors also seems to work pretty well. My plan is to take some giant cardboard pieces and make some templates and fit that way. I also picked up a couple pieces of carpet joiner stripping to mate up the floor with the side walls. That should help everything be a little more forgiving on the appearance aspect. Also worth noting -- this stuff is sandable. If you needed to bevel any edges for whatever reason, it isn't terrible to sand away at. |

This is ALL great info. So..is Hydro Turf as easy to cut and lay as carpet? I've recarpted some of my kids fishing boats before, and also laid most of our carpet in our house, so I find carpet fairly easy to lay. is Hydro Turf flexible and easy to cut?

I apologize. I went through my emails again and the word "paint" was not used anywhere in there from HT. The notion was to use more of a rubberized epoxy type product like the liquid Flex Seal for the drastic gouges or unevenness. More just to get it close to flat than completely flat.
HT stated that adhesion to wood and fiberglass (these are the only ones I asked about, I'm sure there are more surfaces) would be fine if using the non-adhesive backed sheets. That meaning you'd need to use the contact cement option. The 3M adhesive backed sheets do require a uniform surface for proper installation (asked less questions on this as I realized my Martinique will not be getting this treatment). |

Derrick, If you find out more info on this, fill us in. I like Tim have never heard of a self leveling paint. |

Never seen a self leveling paint that would get a cc floor smooth either... I bet the typical worst case variation is on the range of 1/4”.

That was my findings. Wayyyyyyy too much work to get it SeaDek ready. HT told me to use a self leveling paint, be generous with the Weldwood contact cement, and use acetone to wipe off any excess. Won't bother the HT a bit. SeaDek plainly said "do not use this with wood flooring unless it is a uniform surface." HT seemed much more forgiving for not truly flat. I guess I will find out one way or another! |

Doesn’t seadeck (like hydroturf) work best when applied to a smooth surface? The adhesive HT ships is a contact cement.
Anyone considering going such a route may want to inspect their (bare) floor first. The surface finish (of a correct craft factory- glass over foam- floor) may surprise you. I suspect it is unsuitable without a lot of work. |

I will make a new thread for my install. As stated above -- should be in the next 2 months that we will start the Hydro Turf project! Currently rebuilding seat boxes, cleaning interior/teak, hooking up the rudder port/rudder/steering, blower/vent hoses, and anything I can't think of that I have started... Funny... I started off this winter project season with only thinking of doing the flooring. Once you start digging, no telling how far down the hole you'll go, lol. |
