Alright guys I pulled the motor from the boat to better the oil changing situation with a drain hose off the pan plug so that the oil didn't get drained in the hull anymore, and since the motor was outI decided to go through it. Good thing! The hex oil pump rod is twisted in the bottom of the distributor, and bound in there. I am not going to put that dist. back in, and am wondering if there is a step up in a different points dist., or what others have gone to? Thank you in advance for the replies. B

Better check the oil pump , pick up screen and valve seals . Something caused the pump to get tight or momentary lock up then the oil drive will twist and break. I have seen the valve seals get rock hard and break up then get sucked up in the pump. The timing gears can also cause this.

Mike is right, what it absolutely was not was a problem with the distributor (although it might have broken the distributor gear). The crank turns the cam, the cam gear turns the distributor, and the only way for that shaft to twist is for the oil pump to not be able to turn when the distributor turns. Whether from debris, or excessive wear/pump breakage.

Or high volume pump without hardened shaft, or even with a hardened shaft I've seen 'em twist a few times particularly with heavier oil. High RPM, heavy oil (20w50), and high volume pumps are the contributors here. Or, outright breakage of the pump or debris (unlikely to get past screen) as you mentioned. |
