Just be happy you have some to take, most of my battery problem at Green Lake was removing the seat---

Oh geez Gary, no knobs? Gotta at least get something functional on there, can't imagine going after them with a wrench, especially with that console. The original knobs are indeed hard to find... you almost make me feel bad for using a pair on my mirror. But not quite.

There is so much want in that photo. It's like a time capsule from my formative years. You guys with color. I"m afraid I have a vanilla boat for my vanilla life. |

John, I started a thread on my Skier so as not to detract from yours.
I know what you mean about the colored hulls, as I have a weakness for them... but that sparkly cream HM Mustang of yours is going to turn some serious heads when it's done. Keep fighting the good fight! |

I polished the spare set of valve covers last night. I'm really not liking the look of the original bolts on them. Probably won't notice them once it's together but they make some nice plated and SS ones but they are allen heads. I'm trying to decide if I should have the machine shop build my spare H/M and offer it for sale. I really don't need a spare hanging around. It may be just the thing for someone who wants to re-power.

Nothing special about valve cover bolts... we are using some McMaster stainless hex bolts on the BFN. I've seen chromed steel ones at the hardware store too.

John,
If you are going after the chrome look and get SS, it needs to be buffed. The SS comes out almost looking like chrome but to tell the difference, you need to look at it real hard. I've been forced to use lot's of buffed SS fasteners on restorations because the availability of chrome platted brass is limited. A loose (unsewn) wheel on the pedestal or bench grinder and "cut" and "color" compounds works best. It's real hard to do by hand!! |

Request for help.
I believe the original plug for this H/M 302 is an Autolite BF32. NOS ones are available but I would think there is something current as good or better. Would anyone care to share their current spark plug preference for these engines? I would assume something toward the cooler range would be desirable. Thanx. |

I seem to remember using Champion F9Y's but not 100% sure. With the P heads and their smaller plugs I use something completely different now. Here is something I found when I googled Autolite BF32-

Thanks Gary, that's one of the threads I visited. I have found a lot of information on the 289/302 as it applies to cars, and the same plug may work for both. I am concerned that the boat, operating at much higher throttle settings, will have higher combustion temperatures. I want to hit that sweet spot of hot enough to keep them clean, but cold enough to prevent detonation. |
