I have a 1996 Ski Nautique 176 and when I bought it used in August 2005, the owner had just put a new steering cable in it the day before I bought it. I then had to replace it in Summer of 2006 and now it has gone out again which will make 3 new steering cables in 3 yrs of use.

Anyone got any ideas as to what the underlying problem could be?

Well, it was replaced by the dealer the first time and I bought the 2nd one from White Lake Marine, so I believe both were factory cables.

Steering cables + salt water =

We ahd some salt water in our bilge in our 98, and the very next outing, the cable was noticably more stiff.

I just replaced the original cable in my 95snob a few days ago. It was still usable but stiff. I agree, salt water is a killer on everthing that moves. Maybe see if you can get one that has a grease fitting, like an outboard.
