I just bought a 1978 ski tique, had it out 3 times. found the carb drips after shut off. out of the right primary. Had local mechanic rebuild the carb now it leaks out of both after shut off. He says that if he adjusts the floats any lower it will cause a lean condition. he says the only way to fix is a angle plate to level the carb. Hope you guys might know something he doesn't from the boat world.

thanks

Rick, I have a angle plate under the carb on my 77 Tique. Do you have the Ford 302 or the GM 305?

I couldnt tell you what your problem is, but Im pretty sure an angle plate wont help. Its been discussed at length here in the past that a properly adjusted carb wont require an angled spacer to run properly. I think you have other issues to worry about- you might want to find another rebuilder.

Didn't it have an angled carb plate when you bought it? I would think that it should have had one from the factory. If it doesn't, he may be right.

However, Tim is right also that a properly adjusted carb should not require an angled spacer.

By "leaks out of both", does that mean both the primary and secondary bowls or the just the right and left primary bowl?
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Depends what motor he has. I dont think PCM ever used the angled spacers. Im not familiar with the Escort but I would question whether they originally used them either- except I dont want to upset Pete.

well I would get a new mechanic fast because anyone that states if I lower the float more it's going to lean out the motor, is blowing smoke up your ass and screwed up the re-build.

The angle late will probably fix it, but if you adjust the float a little more it will stop. Had the same problem on my 83 2001 and I lowered the float just a little and no more drip. No problems with leaning out as long as your fuel pump is good. Make sure you check your anti-siphon valve and the screen in the inlet fitting on the carb as well as the fuel filter to make sure there is not a flow restriction anywhere.

Thanks alot. I'll try getting him to lower it a little more to see if it stops. I have seen alot of inboard ski boats but this ski tique is so short the motor does seem at a steeper angle than the others.

Trash in the carb will get into the float bowl valve preventing it from closing all the way and will cause the carb to do just what you describe. Your mechanic should have seen the trash and advised you. You have to remove the carb bowl, clean it out, and re-assemble. (very easy to do) Then add an in-line fuel filter or the problem will quickly re-occur. The trash will look like a fine powder and comes from oxidation (light rust) in the fuel tank. (Been here, done this.)

79 that was my first thought, it wont lean with low floats, it will studder like me when i reach for the wallet,
that carb worked on that boat for 25 years,
Mechanics tend to have some damn good excuses for reasons why something wont work, especially once they are paid,
Is the angle plate missing? was it there originally? better yet pay the extra 20 and have it done right. His mechanic that got paid should be trying to figure this out. why would a angle plate fix it if it never had one to begin with?

just venting...its early

I don't know if it ever had an angle plate it says commander on the valve covers, if that helps someone decide wether it had one originally. I'm not at the boat right now so I can't look at anything else to see if it is a pcm. I took the carb apart myself first and it looked clean. But the mechanic did, or said he put a kit in it which included a bowl needle and seat valve.

thanks

Back to the part where it was mentioned....a properly adjusted carb should not need an angle plate...TRUE.

I agree with one or the other diagnosis's...either the floats are too high or the needle is not seating (as Jim mentions).

This subject has come up many many times....and it's almost always the float adjustment or needle seat!

Good luck!

Rick,

Forgot to ask this question. Does you carb have the sight holes on the side of the bowls(small screw that can be removed to see the level). If so set the level as holley suggests.

If you don't have the sight holes....remove the bowls and set the floats yourself based on info you will find in the reference sect. on this site. I have never needed an angle plate!

I have two 1972 boats with 302 engines and one with a 351...all three run a 1060 holley and I have been where you are on all three boats...it was the flaot ajustment twice and once it was the needle seating problem caused by sediment.

I think I'm getting the picture. I was concerned about my mechanic saying I could lean the motor by adjusting the float to low and over heat the front cylinders, but that doesnt sound like a problem. I thought the carb and intake looked factory without an angle plate and Ive never seen one on any other inboard. As far as it being the needle and seat. The carb doesn't have site holes but I have taken out a top bowl screw and it won't leak out of it so I think the seat is doing its job. Also the venturis drip even after shut off even with the fuel line taken off.
Thanks again to all you guys for the help
this is the first inboard Ive owned, even though Ive been around them for years. I got out of serious skiing and barefooting about ten years ago when i started building houseboats, and I'm really enjoying getting back into it. If you guys want to see a different kind of boat look at the largest legally trailerable houseboat in the world. Its at www.travelwave360.com. It has a main hull 8 feet wide and pontoons that fold off the roof to make it 14' wide X 36' long in the water.
Have a good Weekend All.
Thanks Again.
Headed to the Lake Milford in Kansas for the weekend
