I am preparing to cut holes inside the boat today to mount some 6.5" speakers. Can anyone offer me any input? I have a 5" hole saw. I measured the 4 locations and plan on drilling a pilot hole in the center then using the drill backwards to try to get through the gel coat. Thoughts?

DONT DO IT! FABRICATE SPEAKER MOUNTS THAT DONT COMPROMISE YOUR INTERIOR.
I did that one my first 2001 and regretted it. This current 86 of mine will not get cut! Someone pull up the link of the speaker/cupholder that was fabricated by someone over on the2001.com to show what can be done without cutting speaker holes the vinyl. |

I agree but, if you do go through with the holes for the speakers, you might as well drill a bunch more for cup holders! |

Pete- You're usually brilliant with the search feature. Can you pull up that link of the cupholder/speaker mount set up that people have referenced in the past?

Morfoot made a pretty nice setup where he used the fastening holes for the combing pads to hold his custom speaker boxes. Let me see if I can find the link.

Ah yes, this one shows the rears:
http://www.nautiqueowner.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7754&PID=75943&title=stereo-depth-finder-on-88-2001 and this shows the fronts: http://nautiqueowner.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13640&PID=157342&title=2001-or-other-speaker-box Really slick work. It's hard to tell if the rears required small holes, or those where combing pad mounts also. |

Maybe something similar to the way Morfoot did the rears could be done in the front too? |

You just saved my boat from having 4 holes punched in it. Now I will start fabin' up these boxes. I'll probably do the smaller ones since I plan on having no rear seats and I have deluxe front. Thanks guys. This site is bomb.

Those arent the pictures I was thinking of. Anyone else remember the fabbed speaker boxes with the cup holders in them, and can find a picture? Those were pretty good looking too.

I can't find the thread ether. Larry, I think we a thinking the same one. The member made a skeletal frame, stretched fabric over the frame, did some epoxy work I believe and then finished them off in vinyl??? Who was that??? |
