    Posted: September-07-2020 at 3:10pm
I have a 1998 Nautique Super Sport on a 2000 Trailermate trailer. I put new bearings and races in the hubs this spring and repacked everything with grease. it looks like the rear seal failed at some point and the bearings on the starboard side of the trailer failed yesterday. I do believe that this trailer may have been damaged at some point before I purchased the boat in 2015. The trailer aft of the axle is twisted and looks like it has been repainted. I have had many issues and struggles with the trailer since I have owned it.

I am considering a replacement trailer. I am wondering what everyone would consider to be a good trailer brand. Ramlin, Prestige, Eagle, etc. The Trailermate I have has adjustable bunks and is C channel construction. I would like a wishbone style trailer or bunks with permanent welded uprights. I am in the early stages of research on this and would appreciate any input that anyone would have.

Thanks

You may want to consider Boat Mate in Tennessee near Knoxville.  That seems to be the trailer the new boats get in the Southeast. Ramlin in Orlando seems to be only in the trailer repair business. However, I have also heard they are still making new trailers too. Not sure what the deal is with Ramlin. That would be my choice, but there is talk that they are not building new trailers anymore.  I believe at one time Prestige Trailers was also out of business, but maybe they are back now.  Ex Loader also makes an inboard trailer too, but I am not familiar with their inboard trailers. I had one for a pontoon in the past that was well made. Some of the guys love Eagle and some of the Eagle trailers make the boat ride very high on the trailer. C construction would be better than the tube construction.

Get a boatmate through a Southeast US Correct Craft dealer and they’ll send it to Ramlin in Orlando and have them cut and re-weld a brand new trailer it so it’ll work right. Or take your existing trailer in and have new spindles or axles put on. If it’s not rusted through it’s repairable.

I have a 2013 Phoenix under my 95 SS Didn't like the winch/roller setup so I changed it over to the Ramlin style. If I was having a new one built I would want the rear guide poles moved up toward the fenders though. The last few feet of the hull where it angles in allows the boat to move sideways between the guides, prop gets really close to the trailer by the white arrow. Trailer tows very well, stops on a dime with 4wd disc's. Uses Kia calipers and rotors and has the Vault hubs

Bow stop-

Original set up. Bow ring and nose of boat gets caught up depending on angle of ramp

Bunk setup-

Thank you everyone for the info. I will look into these suggestions.

Gary, I see that you are in IL and so am I. Who did you go through when you bought your Phoenix trailer? Direct? Phoenix dealer? Nautique Dealer?

I bought everything through N3,the Nautique dealer in Indianapolis. Don’t know if the boat had a trailer when they got it or if it was bad but they ordered this trailer for this boat.

Silver Spray Sports in Fenton  MI has a very good relationship with Phoenix.
Talk to Jeff or Patti....they will get you where you need to be.

Just another option.

My son has a Ram Lin wishbone trailer for sale that he is told is for a Sport. It is sound, but a bit of a project. I believe it is on facebook market place.

Thanks for the info Bruce. The Sport is a direct drive and I have a Super Sport, which is a V Drive. The issue with the Sport trailer will be that the axle is too far forward and I will not have enough tongue weight for the V drive. I do appreciate the heads up.

Gotcha, I don;t know much about the modern boats beyond SN.

For new trailers, we bought a brand new Boatmate for one of our boats and it is a very nice trailer.  Not a wishbone, though.

I talked with couple of dealers in my area and I narrowed my choices down to a Boatmate and a Phoenix trailer and I decided to go with the Phoenix. I am placing an order for one with a bow stop instead of the roller and it will probably be ready in 8 - 10 weeks. I will pick it up and then switch over the boat from the old trailer to the new trailer next spring most likely. Thank you again for everyone's help.

Update on the trailer. I got the boat switched over to my new Phoenix Trailer. I am very happy with it. It rides nice, loads great, and the surge disc brakes work great. Here are some photos. Gary had mentioned that the guide posts on his Phoenix trailer are back where the stern angles. It looks like they have changed the design as my guide posts are a little farther up. It definitely sits higher then my previous trailer, but the prop guard is higher and I don't scrape it everywhere, so I am enjoying that. So far so, good and I am looking forward to this summer! Thank you again to everyone for the help!

Looking good! Out of curiosity could you post up the brand, size and load capacity of the tires please? I'm going to go get new ones for mine just wondering what they put on a single axle. I'm leaning towards a Carlisle with a load rating of 1800 ea at $84.00 vs Goodyears 2200 ea at $130.00

Gary, the boat is at my parents place at the moment, but I will try and get over there as soon as I can and get the tire information.

Gary, here is the info on the tires on the new trailer:
Brand - Load Star Karrier KR35
Size - ST225/75R15
Load Capacity - Load Range D, Single 2540 lbs, Dual 2200 lbs

My old Trailer had Rainer ST branded tires with the same size and Load Capacity.

Wow, that sits high on the raised bunks. What's the reason for such tall risers on the rails? It's a lot of weight sitting above the tops of the fenders.

I think it's to keep the trailer within width constraints. These trailers are wide as it is,if the boat sat down between the fenders the trailer would be even wider. My Mustang and my Shamrock I have no trouble towing, their track is inside the tow vehicle. The Phoenix you have to be very careful in construction zones- I have taken out several orange barricade drums. I'll have to measure it but I think it's track is wider than my Avalanche's,so if your just on your side of white line the trailer wheels are on the other side of that line

I have not towed much with it yet or very far for that matter, but with what I have done, it rides on the trailer great. I think as long as I am not flying around corners or parking parallel on an incline, I don't for see it being a big issues. My old trailer had adjustable bunks that would seem to drop over time no matter how much I tightened them. I have enjoyed the solid bunks.

Gary, I just paid out the door $165 for the new Goodyear (1 mounted tire -- will get another after I go back to the lake).  My other boat is right at load capacity for 2 Load Cs. The tires always make it 5 years, then it gets ugly.  Prior to the new GoodYear Endurance, all I could get were GoodYear Marathon (crap) or Carlise (slightly better crap) which were load C max psi 50 in my tire rim size.  I have the old crappy GY Marathons on it right now.  Like clockwork, first run to the lake just shy of 5 years on my trailer (5.6 from trailer tire born on date) starboard side starts to separate.  Luckily this time I was at the state park with nice flat parking lot to throw on the spare.  I am more than happy to pay more to put the 2200 load D, 65 PSI max on that trailer now that the GY Endurances are out.  More capacity the better.

If this is for the Shamrock, I vote pay more $$ and get more load capacity.

Ironic thing for me is that the trailer I tow to the Ruckus with, with a lighter boat, has the new Endurance that run at 80 psi for their size.  I love that!  The more excess load capacity the better.  I am damn glad to finally getting some excess load capacity on my Stingray's trailer.

I will still replace at year 5, but always better to replace at my leisure vs running to or from the lake.

They are for the Nautique Rich. The Shamrock is a different animal,it must be quite a bit lighter than my Nautique. Don't know if you saw me last time at the river run launching and retrieving it but with the 215 75 14's from the Nautiques trailer that trailer floats. It uses 175 75 13's normally. I just bought no name tires for it from e trailer and towed it 1500 miles with no problems. The Nautique I'm leaning towards the Carlisle because even with their lower capacity than the Endurance's they still have 3000 lb over what the gross of the boat and trailer. That's almost another boat. They are supposedly made here as well.

My good friend works as an admin assistant for the company that makes the Carlisles.  They also make the classic Crager mag wheels.  They treat her good so I really wanted them to work for me too, but I opted for the excess load capacity.  Glad they will work out for you.

I'll will say one thing this "car" is pretty boring to drive,I mean it will do 80 towing the Nautique with no sweat. It must be pretty fulfilling knowing that on your work day 1- Hey it started ! and 2- you have another chance to possibly beat your personal best of 79 LOL
