Been a tough couple of weeks/months in regards to the Skier.  Got the engine in and had a very bad vibration at around 2000rpm.  We troubleshot everything we could (unbalance weights, disconnect tranny, run on engine stand, etc etc.).  Long story short the engine shop has it back apart and we are waiting on a call.  Always something with this one.

Think she is ready to water test. A few clean up items left but shake down next. Also some work on the trailer needed. She is on a spare trailer now.

We have alignment issues with this pump. We had to do some work on the water pump bracket and some shimming to get it where it looks good. It does have 1-1/4” inlet and outlet which is nice because so does the tstat housing and the trans cooler. I would be game to look at others. This impeller is wider but not larger in diameter.

We made it to the boat for yesterday evening and this morning. Throttle and trans cable connected. Wiring cleaned up/connected (after below pic). Batt cables run forward to box. Fuses installed. Fuel line and fuel filter installed. Bilge pump hose installed. Raw water hoses installed. Exhaust tubes installed. Floor fitted.

Next up…doghouse install, dipstick fitting and some other small items.

I'll guess that you have a Sherwood L80 pump right now Dave.

It's a slightly overgrown G21 and has 1 1/4 inlet and outlet fittings and the impeller is slightly bigger in diameter and width. There are other part numbers too for the same pump with 1 inch fittings

If you were to put a G21 in it's place, you'd probably run into some alignment issues.

I'd probably stick with what you have assuming it fits right.

It's discontinued but plenty of parts are available for it.

Ah, and I was just remembering the PCM 351 pump we have is a 1" and not 1.25" like the Commanders have.

Not the pump pcm used on the 454 (g55)… looks like a scaled up g21.

A pic would be great. Would love to trade if you need a BBC pump.

David, we have a pump from a PCM SBF.  I believe it's a Sherwood.  I can take a photo later this week if you still need one.  It sounds like the pump you have is the same pump on an older BBC PCM?

We are using a Sherwood water pump that was originally on a big block which had a larger impeller. Therefore the housing is a touch deeper than normal for a 302 commander setup. The back of the pump is touching the fuel line. Anyone have a smaller water pump they want to part with. We could do an even trade. We have a brand new impeller installed. No water through yet. Just a little dawn soap. What we have will work, it is very tight and we had to bend the fuel line some.

They aren’t stainless. They are brushed aluminum. The stainless ones look good though!

Dave,

Very pretty work here.  I am not trying to add tasks to your list.....I do have a thought though.  I love the commander exhaust manifolds, and I believe they are stainless. They would look really cool polished out.  Or at least sanded and finished with a very fine grit.  Would really set that motor off.  Just sayin'

I hope all is well.

Short stint with the boat this morning on way to the lake. Prop shaft cleaned up and in. Prop on. New wood wedges cut for under motor mounts. Engine in boat. Hoping to get it adjusted, mounted and aligned after Christmas. Merry Christmas all!

Starter bolted on, all wiring done, new batt cable and crimps. Oil pump primed. And she ran. Adj idle and timed at idle to 10 deg. Happy day. Packed up and left. Next up, install engine and align, install ancillary parts, install dog house, and decide when to water test/break in.

The dipstick tube.....it went to a good home Wink

Counter clockwise for the drill direction. prime for about 15 seconds or so, rotate engine 90 degrees, prime, rotate engine 90 degrees....repeat till you're happy with oil flow at rocker arms.

If you get yourself a priming tool, you won't have any chance of the socket falling off the extension and landing in the sump

Not a necessity but nice to have, since you can clamp the guide in place with the distributor hold down bolt

1/4 inch hex for your 302 as compared to 5/16 for a 351.

Got to the barn last Fri evening. Couple of pics. The trans on the wheelbarrow is pre paint. As is the new press fit dipstick…thanks Ken. We still have to measure and adjust stick but happy to have a tube we think will work. Got the majority of the wiring done on the engine. Installed the trans. Still need to install and wire the starter as well as neutral safety. Then we hope to start it.

To circulate oil…drill with hex bit, spin slow, and do we remove a valve cover to see oil come up I think?
