The other day at the lake, after riding for a while, I noticed that I no longer have reverse. Has anyone experienced this, and what should I do at this point? I looked at the lever on the transmission, and it looks like the throttle handle is actuating it properly, but it never clicks into gear. Forward and neutral still work fine.

Thanks,
Keith

Sounds like your reverse band has broken.
I hate to be the first one to say this but it looks like it's time to pull it and take it to a transmission shop and get a rebuild.
When my transmission went out in my 78 SN, the reverse was the first to go. It would still drive forward but no reverse.
I had mine rebuilt about 12 years ago and at that time it cost me around $225.00 parts and labor. I don't have a clue what it would cost today. I think it is cheaper than a standard automatic out of car.
Yours does have the Borg-Warner right?

Well, you guys convinced me. I pulled the transmission out yesterday. My next question is, should I tear it apart myself, or take it somewhere to get it rebuilt.

Getting it out was not much trouble, and I think I could take it apart myself, but wondered how difficult it will be.

If you've done this, let me know how difficult it is.

Well, I took the transmission apart last night. This is what I found. I guess this is the problem.
