Eric;
Now keep in mind, I throw nickels around like they were manhole covers!!! But, I popped the ring gear off tonight, and after close inspection, there are a few teeth that that are pretty much worn down, so I think I will splurge. I also owe you a call to get the damper. Today got away from me. Dave |

New ring gear has been installed. Things are looking good.
Problem: Got the new Sachs damper, and the holes don't line up with the holes in the flywheel at all. Pete....Did the holes line up on yours when you got it, or did you have to modify it (other than trim the edges) in any way to get it to fit? |

David,
This is a new one on me! Where did you end up getting the plate? You did get the one with the 7 sets of holes in it correct? I'm surprised and think it may be time to call the place you got it from. Wow!!! |

I got the one you recommended from MER. I did call them, and they do not have one that would fit my system. They were very good about it, and told me to return the one they sold me for a full refund. Excellent folks to work wiht!

David,
If Mer doesn't have one then I would have to think Sacks doesn't make it?? How did Mer determine they didn't have it. The flywheel or the engine? Eric, You may need to come to Davids rescue here! David, I would have to think Eric ha all the Sachs reference #'s. |

Pete...The spline was a match, but, the legs that bolt up didn't fit. I gave them the dimensions of the bolt pattern and the flywheel itself, and they didn't have one. They told me they deal mostly in bigger diesel rigs, so our ski boats and run-abouts may not be in their sweet spot.

Pete....I talked to Eric the other day, and he was fresh out of them. But, he had another shipment coming in from his supplier so that is why I ordered from MER.
The bolt pattern diameter is 11". The actual diameter of the flywheel to the edge of where the plate rides is 12 1/4". The two bolt holes on each leg are at 3 1/4" centers. |

David,
Last night it occured to be that you may be trying to use 6 bolts instead of the 3 that the Sachs uses (1 on each leg). I was going to get out of bed and post it but figured it could wait till this morning. Did you try 3 bolts only? A last resort may be to take the flywheel and dampner into a machine shop. They could ether jig bore or CNC new holes for the shoulder bolts into the flywheel. Edit: I mentioned machine shop meaning not the automotive machine shop in the back of Napa. Their equipment is set up for machining engine components and very specialized. They may not be able to handle the holes and the necessary accuracy. |

Pete;
You worry too much!!! I really appreciate you thinking of solutions on this, but, its no biggy. I did think of using three bolts instead of six, but, still no fit. So, I think what I am going to do at this point is to go ahead and get things put back together with the old unit. If it goes, I will replace it when that happens. However, at the speeds I chug along at, it may last forever. At least I have the new ring gear on, and thats the harder thing to replace. Let me ask your opinion on this....I wanted to try and fire the engine up before I put it in the boat to see if it has any leaks, or issues. At least I can work on it before I go to the trouble of putting it in the boat, and then having to take it back out. Have you ever done that? Would you recommend it? Thanks! Dave |

Dave,
Running it outside the boat is always a good idea. I've always had a engine cradle made out of 2x10's to simulate the stringers and the engine lagged to it. A engine stand will work too. Gas, water and the battery and you're good to go. Water discharge out the exhaust I've done a couple ways. Summer has been just out the shop door. and in winter a couple pieces of gutter downspout out under the door. I'd wait and see what Eric has to say about the dampner or give him another call. I'd just hate to see you have a problem with the old one. The brand of dampner you have isn't the greatest per Eric. I had one on my Escort too and I could tell it had some broken (or very weak/worn) springs in it from the play between the center hub and outer plate. I've always put Sachs dampners back in. |

Pete;
If I run the engine on a stand, can I do it without attaching the transmission, but, attaching the flywheel for balance. That way I can deal with the damper before I put the transmission on. Thoughts? Dave |
