Very Nice, my 95 sometimes surges also. Never enough to bother me.
Glad it is running with no strange noises! Mark |

Quick update - Connected the water tonight and started her up. Initially, I thought timing was way off and I couldn't get it to settle down. Then I remembered about the "plug" I was supposed to remove to set the initial timing. That got it and I was able to confirm my guess at stabbing the distributor was nearly perfect - that doesn't happen for me too often
![]() Ran the engine for 22 minutes, varying the rpm somewhat but keeping it somewhere between 1800 and 2200 for the most part complying with the cam and lifter break-in procedure Mark laid out. All in all a good first run, though there are a couple minor bugs I'll have to chase down such as the tach isn't working and I seem to have developed a leak at both exhaust manifold elbow fittings. Even this new engine has a bit of a surging problem from time to time so I am suspecting that pesky IAC is still not quite right somehow, unless someone has a better thought. |

Well guys, I finished all the odds & ends late last night including reinstalling the driver seat. Topped off the battery today while at work and put some fresh fuel in tonight when I got home. I didn't make it home in time to do the 20 minute lifter break-in that Mark outlined, but I just had to turn the key to make sure the fuel would prime and the engine would turn over with no hic-ups. Half a revolution and she growled, grumbled and rumbled !! Kind of scared me at first because I really didn't expect it to take off that quickly. Of course I shut her down quickly ... fighting the urge to give it just a few revs

Motorcraft@O'Reilly's
There is an HD a little over a mile down the road. But there's an O'Reilly's about a half mile closer. Sorry Pete, but I don't really like orange either ![]() |

Red filter.....no way! Instead of cleaning out that pesky fuel tank, how about one of these:

I think you could make JQ really jealous if you put a red oil filter on that thing ![]() |

Thanks for all the nice comments! Finally - just about done with this whole project
![]() Got busy again tonight and finished up the rest. I had been planning on cleaning out the fuel tank since the rest of the boat was so dirty/ grimy and did that first thing. Good thing too because there was at least a half inch of .... well I don't know what - chunks & flakes of some black pulpy stuff settled at the bottom of the pick-up. It's a wonder it could siphon anything out of that well without clogging up the screen! ![]() With that done and installed I finished the blower and bilge pump then moved on to filling the fluids. Hmmm..... wouldn't you know it. I could have sworn I had a new filter and trans fluid. So picking those up on the way home tomorrow and I should have it ready to turn the key for the first time! Think it'll be beer time first though ![]() |

Thanks! Muffler was in good shape I just wanted better sound. Getting rid of that big thing really freed up a lot of space under the engine cover as well - makes it a lot easier to access the various things on the back side too. |

It is looking very good. Nice work. Did your exhaust fail or is the change to a Y pipe for better sound or performance?

LOL, yes I saw that post. And yes, with everything I'm going to be thinking about it would be my luck to leave it that way. It's kind of like getting the boat out of winter storage and doing a quick start-up so you can hit the lake the same morning, then forgetting to put the plug in. Not that I've done that .....

So I was able to get a lot more done on the ol' girl this weekend than I had figured. I'd guess I'm between 95% and 98% done. Only thing left to do before I can turn the key is install the bilge pump, blower & air ducts and clean out and install the fuel tank.
But here is how it looks now: ![]() ![]() And the straight through Y-pipe exhaust ![]() ![]() ![]() Over all, everything assembled fairly easily, though there were a few hic-ups. Probably the biggest one was after getting the transmission installed and engine aligned I realized that I had forgotten to tighten the trans line fittings and no way to spin the 22 1/2 fitting at the bottom without taking the transmission back out - that set me back a couple hours ![]() See all that RED JQ ?? I dooo like the red ![]() |

Love the RED bell housing and oil pan. It coordinates nicely with the gelcoat color scheme.

Throttle goes under the motor and up from the rear on the left side of the tranny. The transmission cable fishes up past the water pump around the front behind the alternator then back along the valve cover to the linkage.
Just feed the tranny cable in that general area where it works out the best. |

Just discovered that I didn't take any pics of the throttle and shift cable routing and bracket mounting locations and don't remember where or how they go. When this whole project started I was only planning on a head swap to the GT40P heads so with just a couple of days it didn't seem like I'd forget. BUT that's been 4 or 5 months ago now.
If anyone has pictures, or can snap a few for me, or at least talk me through it, I'd appreciate the help. THANKS ![]() |

Ha ha ... you guys
![]() ![]() The pan is another one of those preference things though. I recall how tight it seemed under there before and when I'd drop a nut or washer it would be heck retrieving it so I'm more inclined to leave more space than less. And considering I already had the original pan and had also already had it powdercoated .... Incidentally, for those that are thinking about using a std. automotive pan, though we now know it will clear in the bilge, they'll also have to use the automotive oil pick-up. The marine version being shallower and configured a bid differently they use a proprietary pick-up that may be too shallow to do the job well and may not allow the pan to bolt up anyway because the deep well is located further aft - the marine version extends downward further forward. Paul, I would have liked nothing better than to assemble it complete first. Unfortunately my space is very limited - i.e. the ceiling height is very low - so I don't have the option of an overhead hoist. I was installing with an old school cherry picker - plenty of lifting capacity but the arm only goes out so far and that was still about 3 or 4 inches short of being centered on the cradle. My Son lowered the hoist while I pushed it into place and with the angle of the far side chains I'd surely have damaged something had I tried it fully dressed. I do like the gizmo in your link though .... think I'll have to get one of those anyway ![]() Gary, sorry for the delay but I'm dropping those valve covers @ USPS today - I'll let you know what the shipping is. |

I too noticed that but I just thought that others probably are not the "stickler for originality" that I am. If it is not OEM and perfectly original then I have a problem with it on my boat. Clear down to the trash that CC left in my bilge. Of course when I restringered mine I replace the trash in the same location, just in case an ACBS judge were to be snooping around. We all know what a pita they are. ![]() |

Joe, I've noticed some absolute shoddiness in this picture, that based on your previous posts (I was gonna say based on how anal you are, but decided not to ![]() That sticker on the left valve cover may be original but it's crooked and peeling in the lower left corner. It'll eventually drive you out of your mind Not much else on the boat is original so why should that be? |
