What year is that Yukon Brian, my 95 Tahoe 2 door can't break 17mpg downhill get closer to 14 in mixed driving I am wondering if I have to go much newer or change the gears. What I really want is 18 around town 25 highway and 17 highway towing a SN thats what I used to get with my 93 crown vic. Between my 302 Bronco, my v6 Explorer, and my 350 Tahoe (all old) The tahoe gets the best mileage highway towing at thats about 14.5.

I can only see 2 drawbacks: 1) a young guy might not think its cool to drive a suburban, and 2) occasionally, and I mean rarely, the burb can be more difficult to park.

BK, the 17mpg is only in the winter. All summer long I hover right around 20mpg.

I get a consistent 17 to 18 mpg in my 06 Suburban driving a daily 50 mile round trip commute on the highway. Beats the heck out of the 13 mpg I used to get in the full time 4wd 94 Land Rover still sitting in the driveway growing rust. I would like to trade the LR for a commuter bike before this spring.

Tim,
That is a nice lookin ride.
But I still love my 2001 FORD EB EXPEDITION w/ the big 5.4L Triton V8 & Flowmaster duallies!
(Sounds alot like my Nautique )

Yea I know, I'm the ugly american with the big carbon footprint:
Expedition, F150, Motorhome, Jeep, Nautique.
But hey, you only live once & I'm having fun!
And, If we can keep cranking up this global warming we'll have JBears weather up here!

I wouldnt mind driving a Sub, but parking would be a daily issue here for me. Im lucky to have a driveway (5 miles from Boston), and I can barely fit the 4Runner in it. I do have to park on the street occasionally. The box is good for skis and other stuff thats dirty or otherwise requires folding down the back seats.

Also remember that its a 4WD with AT tires. Not sure about the terrain in NorCal, but its very hilly here (see my first pic). Like Joel, I get over 19mpg in the summer.

Joe, my XL/Burb is a 2000 bought in Nov 00. It is 4wd and has the 5.3 liter, 285 HP if memory serves. One other benefit, I've never had to sleep in a tent since I've owned the burb.

Joel, if I want to baby it on the highway, I can see 20 mpg, but can't do it around town.
On the other hand, I've run from San Francico to LA averaging 85mph, including over 80mph up the Grapevine, and still 17 mpg. Much as Aemmer suggests, consistently 17. Hand the keys to the wife, 17. Loan to the neighbor, 17.

Towing the boat, it really depends upon what boat and weight I'm towing, how fast, and how many hills. I'd say when driving sensibily it's in the 14-15 area. Less sensibly somthing less.

Recent trip to Tahoe, elevation 6000 feet, I got 11 mpg towing my SAN up to the lake (about 200miles). I got 15 mpg towing it home. It was snowing on the trip home if the cold weather makes a difference. I was averaging about 70 mph in each direction.
(Edit, I was averaging 70 mph on the highway. In fact, I had the cruise control on 70. However, there are 30 or 40 miles of single lane road in an out of tahoe. No idea how fast I was going. As fast as safe???).

Tim, while I don't often have an issue with parking, my wife would be more comfortable in a smaller car. Once our baby stops throwing food and making a mess in the car, I'll likely buy a smaller vehicle. The burb fits in the garage, but we would have a bigger walkway with something smaller. I'm also fortunate to have a 2004 4 door Silverado which is sitting in the garage barely used. (only 29K miles in 3.5 years). So, I don't need the burb for towing or carrying stuff. BKH

BKH, I wouldnt have a problem parallel parking a larger rig- there just arent many spots around that are big enough to fit a 'Burb. I seriously doubt a full size truck could make the turn into my driveway- it takes 2-3 tries for me to line it up as it is (did I mention I need to move to a place with more room?).

This isnt the first time Ive heard impressive reports of mileage on the full size GM trucks. Ill assume that youre actually calculating it by hand? I know my computer reads about 2mpg optimisic.

I do love that the 4Runner does everything well. Lots of nice touches, and its built right too. Interior quality beats anything Ive seen come from the US. Id love to have a full size truck some day though- maybe when I have as many cars as boats

That's a good point. Brian- that's a lot of hand calcualting. Mine will go anywhere from dead on to 2 mpg optimistic based on my tests. Even if it was 2mpg optimistic, I've seen it read 23 and even 24 mpg in the summer.

No computer on the 2000 Yukon XL. Calculated by hand. Here, narrow parking spaces are more likely to be the issue than parallel parking. The Yukon XL has probably been the best vehicle I've owned.

The 2004 Silverado Quad cab has the computer. The computer is generous between .2 to .6 mpg. The pickup has the turning radius of a city bus, has very low gearing, a 6 liter engine, and I only average 13.4 mpg. 15.8 mpg is the best I've ever seen.

BK I like the Yukons and suburbans, but I would rather have my Excursion back with a diesel in it. I averaged 20mpg+ on the expressway. about 17 towing the boat. Oh yeah it was a 4X4 also. I can not take away from the yukons, if I can not find a used Excursion that I like in the next couple years I am thining of a new Yukon XL.

I once parallel parked my Excurison and my 01 sport on Michihan states campus while picking my girlfriend up because we were going camping for the week end. When I got out of the car there were like twenty people standing on the sidewalk in shock and awe. I also agree no need for a tent when you have a rig like that.

Sorry for the long post.

Shock & Awe because:
a) You have such a great looking boat
b) You have a girlfriend
c) You can parallel park a 40 ft vehicle
d) All the above?

Just kidding!!

James: LOL at the "shock and awe" comment!

Don't know or care much about the mileage thing...when the gauge on the '05 F-150 with the 5.4 gets by E I go buy gas and am glad I can still do so. I also don't know about calculate by hand but I do lots of other stuff by hand.

I have never been one to worry about fuel economy either, if I did I wouldn't own a boat. I buy what I like to drive and get fuel when it needs it. I figure I drive my escort to work so I can put gas in the truck and boats.

This may sound strange, but I enjoy putting gas in my Nautique. That means only one thing, I burned up the previous tank.
I equate it to a statement my dad used to make; Don't complain about paying more taxes than the guy next to you. It means that you made more money.

That is very true, I complain about the price for something to do. Knowing it doestn't do any good. But it never stops me from filling the boat up when it's empty. I enjoy every second that me and my family and friends spend in the boat on the water.

Gotta agree boys!
The high prices we pay to play do suck.
But, wether It's:
Gas in the Boat/Motorhome/or the Expy I love to drive,
The big bucks for a round of Golf,
Or even a stupid $6.00 beer at a sporting event,
I figure I've worked hard enough to afford it.
My family and myself enjoy what we can!
Work hard, Play Hard.
God Bless America.

Nauti nailed it.
Like Rodney said in the best movie ever, Caddyshack, " I figure if I bust my ass for 60-70 hours a week, I'll end up with a $60,000,000 funeral"

Nuked! Yowwouch!!

Just remember Brad,
if you end up with a little Lyra II this summer, you'll be outnumbered just like me,
and you'll be spending a lot more time at the flower shows!

Unfortunately can't make it tomorrow.
Daughter's got a hockey game, so coach has to show up!

My boat WILL get wet this year!
May not look real great, but it WILL get wet!
