Hey,

I have a Ski Nautique 1982. I purchased it two years ago and I was looking at the bottom of the hull. I have some scratches from the trailer boards on booth sides. There is carpet on the boards and it is a drive on trailer. It looks like they were made from the boat being driven on the trailer. Does anyone have any comments or solutions for repair.

Some suggestions:

Make sure the bunk carpets are clean. Sand, dirt and dust collects in the carpet and will act like sandpaper. Perhaps even replace the carpet.

If you change the carpet, inspect the bunks themselves. As the wood gets old and rots, it creates, ridges, bumps, etc which will scratch the boat, even with carpet over it.
Replace the wood if necessary.

Try to make sure the bunks are wet before you pull on. Either back the trailer in deeper than necessary to get them wet, then pull out to your loading depth, or pour water on them.

Also, on a boat of that age, it may be that the rest of the boat, which does not scrape over the bunks has oxidized, rather than the section which touches the bunks is scratched.

I suggest not looking at the bottom of the hull; then you won't worry about it.

Ryan & Brian's suggestions are good. Be careful with newly carpeted bunks--they may be slicker, you don't want to lose the boat on the ramp.

I agree with the Lake suggestion. Same logic I use as far as going under the motor box.

Seriously tho.....Ryan and BKH know what they are talking about.

Hey,

Thanks for the response. I like the don't look down approach. I will check the carpet and wood.

Thanks again.

BKH has covered it well! Be sure to use bunk carpet and not the what ever stuff! It is designed for an easier "slide" factor!

As carpet wears through , the bolts holding the bunks can scratch the hull.
