I think the 4.3 is a great engine. I have a 94 GMC with 120000 miles and it still runs strong. It's basically a 350 with 2 cylinders lopped off.

You know, the 4200 sure would be nice. More power, more torque, better fuel economy, and that inline 6 would be smoooooth. According to the GM powertrain website, it bolts up to the same transmissions as the 4300 but I don't think anyone makes a marinized version. Bummer.

I had a 4.3 in a 20' Regal bowrider, mercuriser setup. It was a great engine, 180 hp
w/ a 4 barrell carb. The bellhousing, coupler etc.. is the same as a V8 chevy, so it would be a easy swap. |

I have done this swap in a Shamrock and the boat performs very well just wanted yalls thoughts for a ski boat the Tigue weighs alot less I would bet more than half as heavy as my 20 ft Shamrock if it dosnt sell with the old 302 I will swap them out.

Gosh, did I stumble onto a GM forum by mistake? Anyone that knows me well knows that I'm a ridiculously hardcore Ford guy, so I can easily and surprisingly understand the desire to try the 4.3. But IMHO, you'd have to be an equally crazed GM fan to go this route. For starters it would be the more expensive route vs the 302 rebuild unless you've been given the 4.3 engine. And I can't imagine what the 4.3 sounds like thru dual exhausts in one of these boats. Does it sound neat in the Shamrock? The V6s have never had a comparible sound in a performance auto. Just curious. But I say try it as there are also quite a few performance parts out there for the 4.3 to get the HP well up past 200.

A 4.3 only weighs 35# less than an all-iron 302. the 302 has the advantages of higher power potential and max rpms.
By the time you add up mounts, belhousing and exhaust, you could rebuld a 302 with aluminum top end and higher performance for much less than the swap, and come out weighing much less. Don't forget a 351W or even 392 stroker is bolt-in ready if you have a 1/2" to give on each side. If you switched brands it sounds entirely emotional. I'm not against a chevy powered boat, I've driven many, and they run nice, but a swap is not most practical. However in your field you may have lots of cores to play with... But where you going to locate a reverse rotation 4.3?. |
