Will I have any trouble installing an extended pylon on my stock '89 ski nautique pylon? Is there a particular brand that would fit my boat better?

Any extended pylon will work on your boat. The older Nautiques like my 83 have the ring on top of the pylon which requires a different extended pylon or removal of the ring. Barefoot international makes probably the most popular one. You can usually find one in the gear for sale forum on this site or on ebay.

See if you can find a Flitepipe. They are no longer sold, but you can find them used. It mounts to the pylon with two clamps, and has a bow strap. That is what I use and it works great. I am not sure what diameter pole the 89 has, but, my 82 (circle on top) is larger than my 95 (no circle) pole. Make sure the clamp will work on the pole you have.

I have a two piece Skylon that I use on my 88. They usually come with a "fishnet" plastic protective sleeve in different thicknesses that will slide over the stock pylon to ensure a snug fit of the extended pylon and to protect the stock one. I've used it for 5 years and have had no problem with it. I did however cut a tennis ball in half to place on top of the "ball" before I slide on the pylon to prevent the top of it from galling.

I rode in a boat with an extended pylon....the type that slides over the stock pylon....and it really made a lot of noise. So, make sure the one you get has some good feedback from people that have one (not the guy selling it!). The only problem I have with the flitepipe is that it prevents me from easilly raising the seat(95 SNOB). But, I can live with that.

I've got a Barefoot International Fly High and it works great on my '88.
