Refitting the arrestor mesh SN 2001

Getting my 89 SN 2001 ready for the summer and am putting the arrestor back on I am having trouble getting it tightly wound it loosens as more gets wound on is there a technique or should i wirelock it at start to prevent loosening .
Should it be treated with anything once on?
