Engine Hours and Keypad

   I purchased 2000 Air Nautique in 2008. Prior owner replaced keypad before purchase. Hours on meter was 4 hours. I know this is not correct. He did give me old keypad. If I connnected old keypad would I find out exact hours? Would disconnecting new keypad and checking old keypad reset current hours? I want to avoid resetting hours. 

Maintenance bill few months prior to sale (before change of keypad) reflect approximately 50 hours. 

I appreciate your help.
