I'm looking for an anchor. With so many different kinds I have no clue what is best for my situation. I will be anchoring 15' off shore for only 1-2hrs at a time at the lake. My in-laws like to run there boat up onto the shore to hang out on the beach, but after just having the tracking fins, strut, prop and shaft replaced from another problem, I would like to avoid any contact with anything.

Do you guys beach your boats in the manner my in-laws do? Do you think it could cause harm to the boat in any way? Let me know if I'm being dumb and shouldn't worry about anchoring.

TIA

Noah

More info please. Is that from beaching as I had described it? Do you anchor now? If so what weight anchor?

I think it would be helpful to know what type of bottom youre anchoring to (mud, rock, sand), in order to recommend an anchor.

I use a 20 lb mushroom type anchor when the family and I stop for a while for a swim and some lunch. This works well for us but then we have a muddy bottom and the anchor sinks 10" into the mud when let go from 15ft or so.

I used a 16 pound river anchor and it never held my boat, especially on choppy days. Instead of buying another expensive anchor, I went to Home Depot and bought a pyramid shaped concrete deck support, which is probably about 30-40 pounds, bored a hole in the top, screwed in a large screw eye. I call it my hillbilly anchor..works great. If I lose it, it cost me $7 to replace.

i use this in sandy and sometimes muddy bottom can't remember the size it can hold boats up to 20' or so in winds 25 knots. holds pretty strong.
i also beach before trailering but the boat will get gell damage eventually so if you have the option of anchor use the anchor.

Here's a pic of my favorite anchor. She's about an 11 pounder, shapely too! Round plus traffic coneish. She does a fine job of holding the Nautique in place. Best thing of all she was only $4.00 at the flea market.
