I have a choice of the two pumps in the picture. Does anyone have experience with the mercruiser pump? Anyone know the impeller part number? The mercruiser is what came out of the boat I am working on which has now been identified as a 79 american skier. Thanks
Update: I have a bracket off a standard sherwood pump but the front bearing is out on the pump. Has anyone ordered a replacement front bearing for their raw water pump? I am thinking the crank pump would be the best idea. I think the mercruiser is for a reverse engine so wont work in the standard rotation.

Paul, The American Skier came with several engine choices. It may be helpful to give the guys a idea of which engine you have.

looks like a 305 merc setup. May not belong in this boat but sure did come from a inboard merc reverse rotation setup. I have a new block built up (350) waiting for a transmission which should have been here today. Still have the intake to put on and the carb is out getting rebuilt.

Good info thanks!If anyone is using the mercruiser let me know as it seems to be in good shape. Just needs an impeller. Will get a bearing for the regular pump and get it working again.

Paul, The boat sure is looking great! I would go back with the original pump as long as you can get the parts for it. It avoids having to do any retrofiting and you know it worked for the engine. I don't think the Merc engine was original. The boat would have had a PCM 302 Ford or the optional OMC GM 305.

Im really not sure how well it worked on the engine as there was a crack in a cylinder 1/4 inch wide. Somebody blew this engine sky high. Thats why I am going with the standard rotation and the 1:23 transmission. Different everything but I still need a pump. I will go with a sherwood pump because I can find the impellers the first try. But this merc pump turns by hand fine and your right it would fit. Thanks.
This is the best looking boat I have come across and I picked it up for a song so I am really excited. If I can get it completed for 3k I will be real happy. |

I've had both pumps and that Merc pump sucks. It adjusts at the bracket where it connects to the block, rather than on the bracket where it connects to the pump, like the Sherwood. It's a hokey set up and a poor design. It is flimsy. My brother's '80 Century which has a reverse rotation Merc 255, has that pump, and it has been a PIA for the past 27 years.
What not to do, by he who done itIf you use that Merc pump, make sure the bolts you use to connect it to the block are not too long, or you will make a dimple inside the engine in the channel that the push rod for the fuel pump is in and the push rod will become stuck, and then you will be converting to an electric fuel pump. |

That is the information I wanted thanks! Now I will sell that outstanding pump to someone who will appreciate it more than me on Ebay! I did notice how the hole in the bottom of the pan was wallowed out. I guess thats why. I will use either the crank mounted or bracket mounted sherwood. But I am thinking my bracket came off a ford so it may not work too well on this chevy. Here is a better picture of the boat. You chould be able to double click it to enlarge it.
