Other than building the rubrail the woodworking phase is done.  Taking a week off to visit the grandkids then back at it for final sanding.

Well it’s rained 3 days this week so lots of progress.

All that’s left on the deck is the infill on the bow.  Got everything glued down today.  Cut the engine hatch free also, very pleased with the way that worked out.  Everything lines up very nice.  I was able to find some very nice wide mahogany so the rear deck pieces are actually done in a single piece.  Resawn and book matched on each side of the hump.  That area will be blond and should look nice.

I’ve made a few mistakes along the way but always find a way to recover.  😊

Got the outer cover boards fitted.

I’ll get these permanently installed and finish shaping them then get to work on the rest of the infill decking

Thanks for the compliments.

Fitted the bow deck inserts and shaped the hatch cover.  Next up will be the cover boards that run the length of the boat, been avoiding them because I think they’re going to be a challenge.

Very happy with the hatch, I decided to try something and it worked out very well.  Once I built the hatch frame I shimmed it in place to set the gaps then installed and shaped the decking in long pieces that run all the way to the transom.  Now that its complete I’ll cut it free from the rear deck and end up with a perfect deck seams and gap.  I didn’t do this on the Hurricane and I spent a ton of time  and effort trying to get that hatch to look good and was never really happy with it, this process worked out great.

Nice solution for the engine height! Looks like if it were engineered from the factory. Great work.

Hatch planking just needs a little more fine tuning and it’s ready to be fastened down.

Few more shots of today’s progress.

Figured it was time to quit for the day when I tried to install the last piece of plywood upside down onto fresh 5200 and made a mess.

Started building the engine bay hatch.  I altered the framework just a bit to try to get me some more height for clearance to the flame arrestor.  The old y block that came out had side draft carbs but the 302 going in has a typical 4 barrel and needs more height than the old hatch design could offer, my measurements show it’s still going to be real close.  If the hatch doesn’t close we’ll figure it out when we get there.

So I have all the deck plywood installed and started laying out the pattern for the planking.  I ended up making a 20’ straight edge by laminating some 1/4” plywood strips together.  Used that to lay out the planking plan and will use it as a router guide for cutting the deck seams.

Also steam bent the piece that goes across the deck at the transom,  I think that’s the last time we’ll need the steamer on this on.

I ended up rebuilding the dash as the old one had been altered from the original gauge layout quite severely and repairing all the holes was going to be more work than fitting a piece new piece.

Here’s the fore deck layout,  the deck had been replaced by the previous owner and what they put back was not even close to the correct pattern.  From what few photos I could find 1956 had a one year only deck pattern and had a nice alternating staining between blonde and the red mahogany.  That will become more apparent as I gel the decking installed.

Fabricated and test fitted the rear spray rails today.  The curved transom was a challenge but it came out ok. Still need to shape it to fit the stainless rubrail and then finish sand but after this it’s on to the deck.  The top of the blue tape is the top of the waterline as taken from the old planks.

Any Fitbit users out there?  Thursday was a marathon sanding day.  367 minutes in the zone and 14000 steps even though I never left the garage.  Entire boat is now long boarded.

Just an amazing attention to detail, really enjoy your descriptions!

My arms were sore when I woke up this morning from thinking about you doing all that sanding. Smile

Still here, Still sanding!

Starboard side is sanded through 80 grit with the long board.  Port side is about 50%. I’ll wait to do the final 100 grit long boarding until just before staining.

I think this is a little overkill but this is my procedure for long board fairing.  After 80 grit at 45 degree angle to the grain to fair the planking I then use a 6” Festool  orbital sander to take out scratches.  I then draw diagonal lines with a pencil about 1” spaced down the entire side of the boat to use as a guide to find the high and low spots so I can level them off.  After that it’s back to 80 grit on the long board but this time with the grain, this will remove the orbital marks from the power sander. The  pencil lines will reveal areas that need to be leveled.

So one side is completed but my arms needed a day or two before I could get back to side 2 so I decided to fit and temporarily install the forward spray rails.

Ps. The pencil lines reveal every high and low and in the process of sanding the boat has earned a new nickname “Lumpy”.

60+ degrees today so I took advantage of it and rolled the boat outside to get started on fairing in the sides.  First pass is with 40 grit on the  grinder Milwaukee grinder.  That thing gets heavy right hour 5, lol.

One side is done, hopefully the other side tomorrow before the snow returns.  After that it will get another pass with 80 grit on grinder and then I'll switch to long boarding it by hand.

Very cool and great to know about the ability to trailer better and not having to soak to be water tight.  I would love to do a wood boat as a project when I have more free time.  This work thing and two young kids seem to monopolize my time.
