Just got back from 8 days on Lake Powell for an end-of-summer ski binge. It was all free-skiing, but the weather and water conditions were outstanding. We have a houseboat with home port of Antelope Point Marina near Page, AZ. We stayed in Padre Canyon and ski runs started right off the back of the houseboat.
Time to winterize the boat now. As we traveled back to Salt Lake City, a vehicle in front of me hit a small deer. I saw the deer's body tumble out from underneath their truck, but I had little chance to avoid it. I chose to straddle the carcass as my tow vehicle has high ground clearance. The boat and trailer were not quite so lucky. I've got a twin axle trailer and the deer was splattered all over the trailer and the underside of the Ski Nautique. I was able to remove all the nasty deer guts/meat by running through $20 in quarters at a local car wash. JQ |

What a tease!
So you go on what is on mine and I'm sure many more peoples bucket list of trips and only post up a couple of boat pics? Seriously? I'm afraid you'll have to do better than that.. Much better than that. |

Thank you and I really mean thank you. However I don't travel light. I'm afraid, with my entourage, this trip is going to be on me. Three kids and a big lazy mut. Actually it wont be that bad if I can talk my sister in Denver into meeting me there and sharing the trip. Thanks again and get some more pics up when you get a chance. |

Small 50' houseboat runs $5,000 to $6,000 per week. Big 70+ foot boats are double that. Fuel runs about $4.75 at Antelope Point Marina. On the lake at Dangling Rope Marina, It can be up to $1.00 more.
Not including our Houseboat costs, a 1 week trip with food and gas for all boats runs about $2,500 for 10 to 12 people. We are non-drinkers, so that helps out with the overall expenses. JQ |

I was wondering if he saved the strap meat.
And yes, calendar worthy without question but I was thinking possibly we would see some spray with maybe rainbows glinting from the colored rock strata.... The houseboat skiing was an interesting mental image. How fast do those things go and how is the table? I have wanted to do this trip my whole adult life. Maybe this summer. He Gary, try the Veil.. |

Rob, If you were me and were prepared to drop a S ton of cash on a week at Powell, with family flying from various locals, what time of year would you recommend?

Late September to 1st week of October is my favorite time of year. Daytime temperatures are not super hot -- but the water temperature is still upper 70's. Water conditions are outstanding during late Sept/early Oct. Flat -- all day long. Shhhhhhhh. Don't say that too loud. We don't want crowds... JQ |

BaitKiller asked for more photos...
This is at Rainbow Bridge in the middle of Lake Powell. The girls are 2 family friends that were on our houseboat. Yours Truly is the old, fat, bald guy in the middle. My friend skiing inside a canyon (not my Ski Nautique, but a Crownline) JQ |

+1 on late September. I was never able to make in Sept but I hear it's near perfect. We did a few trips the second week of October because it was fall break for the kids. We would call it the guys and kids trip because the women didn't want to go, too cold. It was usually about 70 air and water temp but pretty cool at night. We had two weeks starting the last week in June that was our normal summer trip. The weather was typically good but a couple of times it was on the hot side but still great lake weather. Also, lots of fireworks on the lake for the 4th. I would probably stay away from August, I hear the storms and wind can be pretty bad but late June, early July and Sept are pretty safe. Skiing was OK in June/July but much better in Oct, no wind. |

That first picture is really nice, love the teal. Sounds like an amazing trip!
Do you pretty much provision and stay on the houseboat full time, or do you make trips to towns for shopping or meals or other entertainment? I'm aware of the houseboat rentals but not sure how the trips tend to shape up. How much traveling does the houseboat do, and when under way I assume everyone has to man their ski boats as well? |

We load up the houseboat at the beginning of the trip with the goal to avoid runs to the marina. We are 20 lake miles out, so a run for supplies isn't too big of a killer. Page, AZ has a Walmart and we've had to do the occasional Wally-World runs. We run the houseboat to our favorite canyon and hope to find a spot. Speed is 7-9 mph so a 20 mile trip can take 2 to 3 hours. Once we find a spot and anchor up, we stay there all week. Some bring a runabout boat. I bring the Nautique and tow it behind the houseboat up to the anchor spot. My cousin brings watercraft. The house boat has a fuel tank for refueling the boats. I tie the Nautique up to the back of the houseboat and we can ski from there. Our boat has big screen TV and all the amenities. We ski, hike, explore, boat, play, etc with the houseboat as the base of operations. We always come back to the houseboat for food and rest. Makes for a great vacation. JQ |

Not a bad day on the water for January!! No school for two days for the grandkids down there but obviously not a problem for you guys...very nice runs guys and Larry, you do the best videos for a guy who professes to be "not an expert" at this stuff. I, like John, rely totally on F12 to bail me out!

Our Family has rented houseboats many times over the years, mostly at Lake Shasta in No. California. It really is a great Vacation for those that love to boat.
When we were in College we would get 10 people put in $100 each and go rent a boat for the week. That was 1978. Today the boats have come full circle and are very posh but costs are way up. Our last boat was $8,700 for the week rental. Full upstairs bar and hot tub, multiple big screens. They still sleep around 10 comfortably. Our main challenge has always been keeping Ice for cooling our beverages. You tend to drink a lot when it is 105 out. I think our ice bill was close to our gas bill. The newer boats do have multiple refrigerators and that does help. The pics of Lake Powell are awesome. That visit is still on our bucket list. The comment about the wind brought back a memory. One of my buddies bought a 1982 Ski Nautique brand new, had it painted all black before ever using it and it was beautiful. They took it to Lake Powell and had 5 people in it out skiing. The wind came up and they were trying to make it back to the houseboat when the waves from the wind reached 4 foot high. One wave took the Nautique and spun it 180 degrees while they were going straight at 25-30 MPH. Almost pitched everyone out of the boat and scared the begeezus out of them. He did not trust the boat after that. When they warn be careful of the wind, believe them. Lake Tahoe is the very same when the wind picks up. |
