Please help. I bought a 1985 nautique 2001. It stays about 150 when idling in the water but when running hard across the lake it gets up like to 200 and wants to keep climbing. When you stop back to a idle it cools back down to 145 to 150. Does anyone have any suggestions. I've replaced all the hoses that's about all I've done.

Overheating at speed is usually and indicator of a impeller that needs to be replaced. You mentioned hoses but not an impeller.

The guy I bought it from said the impeller is new but think I'll check it myself. Does anyone know what the timing and points are suppose to be set at?

Travis,
Do check the impeller but you should know that when running hard the temp will climb. However, 180 would be the norm. 200 is certainly past that. |

Pete - Mine never goes above 160F. So he must have a worn pump. or a 160* 'stat.

Travis,
There is a 302/351 Service Manual in the Reference section Timing is 10 degrees BTC at 600 RPM Point Gap is 18 Dwell is 24-29. Download the Manual as it has great info. Welcome to CCF. |

Also, check for restrictions (gunk) in your raw water strainer.
You may have already looked here if you did your hoses, but look for gunk in your tranny cooler, where the water from the lake enters into it. |
