Just a general question or two:
I'm replacing the hoses to the cooler from the transmission. The fluid in the transmission is fairly dark, 39 years and its probably never been changed. Should I change it or just top it off? Does it take plain ole Automatic Transmission Fluid? |

I use type "A" atf.
I change fluid every two to three seasons. Should only take slightly over two and a half quarts. Two quart capacity for the Velvet Drive, the rest to fill fluid lines and cooler. |

Thanks,
I asked because the local transmission shop advised me not to change my Chrysler fluid/filter. They said problems ensue if you do, only after not changing regularly. I went ahead and drained all fluid today anyway. Is Dexron III OK to use? Wikipedia says its backward compatible. I have Dexron II, Dexron III and something in an old-style can (yes a can) that is Type-F. |

Paul,
Did you visit a automotive or a marine trans shop? If automotive, that's really a bad choice. The trans's are totally different. NEVER take their advice. You should have a B/W velvet in the 73. ATF stated as being "Dexron/Mercon" is the way to go - all you really need to stay away from are the so called "high mileage" fluids. They contain additives you do not want in a marine trans. The same is true for any of the automotive additives - NEVER do it. Please fill us in and we will be happy to go from their. |

Yep, thought someone may have extra info like the car tranny folks did.
Its a Velvet-Drive trans... 1:1. I went ahead with the Dexron III. We gotta-roll, so I had to make a decision and go with it. Hope it wasn't a bad one. We've been down since mid-last-summer with all kinda problems.(atrophy) so cant wait any more. Gotta play soon. Thanks |
