My 1999 Mercury Mountaineer clicked over to 148K miles yesterday. This truck is still running rock solid, with no indication of slowing down. I change my oil ever 7K miles with synthetic and take it to Ford for scheduled tune-ups. I felt the urge to post this, because I'm pretty please with the results my truck has given me over the years. That 302 engine is a workhorse. It's never let me down since I've owned it.

I look forward to posting my 200K mark. I truly appreciate the performance my humble SUV has produced over the years. It pulls my Nautique like a pro. Go Ford!

Ken

Ken,

Glad to hear it! I'm pushing 158,000 on my 1500 Silverado, although not totally trouble-free, it has served me well.

That's great Ken. Now if only you could keep the boat running like that.....oops, that may have been out of line Seriously though, glad to hear the boat's running great. We had a 98 Explorer that was nickle and diming us to death at 85,000 miles, so we traded it in on an 02. The 02 just flipped 62000 this morning, and already since we've had it, it has a new computer, transfer case, and a rebuilt rear differential...thankfully all under the extended warranty.    I don't know that I'll get another Ford, but it's great to see you getting trouble free use out of yours.

Hey Rob,

How's it going, my friend. Glad to hear from you. Yeah, too bad my 351's aren't like my 302. With that said, I'm glad to be back on the water.

How's the GT40 treating you? I had the honor to drive Kyle's 176, SN with the GT40. Went like a bat out of hell. I wouldn't mind giving your boat a spin next year. I think I'm going to keep the '86 and buy a '99 Python SN. Tough little monkeys find. Tim keeps telling me GT40. We'll see what happens when the day comes, as I can't find one for sale anywhere!

Ken, again, people are out there, ready to sell, but they just haven't posted an ad. Post a WTB ad and you'll find some Pythons, trust me. They are not tough to find.

Ken; That is real nice about your explorer but it is hardly broke in compared to Reid's. I think he is pushing 300k. Rode in it a couple weeks ago and you would never know it.

Hey..I asked a couple questions about the boat on another thread. Did you see it?

Thanks John. Yep Ken, my 98 5.0 Exploder which I've had since new, just hit 327,000. My engine was replaced under warranty at 48K, so it's only got roughly 280K on it, never added oil. T-case at 116, A/C comp. about 220K, A/C blower two weeks ago. But the trans is still original, maybe because it has a cooler with the tow pkg. It's had other small maint-type issues addressed, and I've questioned how many add'l items I'll end up replacing before she retires, but now the goal is 400. I still daily drive it and I just love the payments. Must of been built on a Wednesday.

Note: The engine was actually replaced TWICE under warranty, the first being at 24,000 for a mysterious light tap that numerous ones apparently had from inception and which I just dismissed as something else. They replaced lifters which didn't fix it so they replaced the whole assembly. 150 miles down the road with the new engine, it was doing the exact same thing. Took it to a specialty guy who upon putting a stethascope(sp) to it said it wasn't internal to the long block and just suggested I ride it for what would then be 24K more miles under warranty. Brought it back at 48K, the service writer raised the hood, listend, then motioned to the same tech as before to "pull it". I just grinned. Third times a charm.

She's running like a champ. I felt bad that you didn't get to drive it at GL....just gives you more reason to come up next year I guess. I had told Jmurph he could drive it as well, and that also didn't happen.

Ken I bought my first Explorer the first year they were introduced – 1991 sold it in 2000 with 185k miles and was still going strong. My wife’s bought a 1997 Explorer that we just gave to our daughter last year when we got a great deal on a 2005 Denali, I needed more truck to pull the ‘Fish’ @ 5,500#; but both Explorers were great – no problems just normal wear & tear maintenance. Hopefully we’ll get just as good of service and reliability from GMC as we did from Ford. May your good luck continue with your Mountaineer. Jerry

Jerry, glad to hear you had better luck with your '91 Explorer than my dad did. By the time he got rid of it (in 2001 with 150k), it was having transmission issues, brake bias issues, tranny issues, and front end issues (again). It was also leaking a fair amount of coolant from the block or heads. Like Nate, I had better luck with my '93 Maxima (sold it this year with 250k).

Tim, your '86 4Runner looks to be in beautiful shape. Im hoping to have similarly good luck with my '07- I just rolled over 10k miles last week.

That is good news. I just rolled over 70k on my 92 Ford PU with the 302. It is good news because my wifes 02 neon got a new trans. at 60k. I hope my truck will last for a while so I can replace that piece of crap neon.

What kills me on almost all the Explorers is they all seem to rust out in the rear portion of the rocker panel right in front of the rear tires, without fail. Every single one in this area. That would drive me nuts if I were the owner of one that did that.

Go figure, I do remember hearing of issues with the coolant leakage from the heads, but not on mine and no rust...maybe I am just lucky. My first experence with a "foreign manufacturer" is my current 2000 Solora, has 257k miles and runs as good as it did when new. Although I want a new car, I am going to see how far I can go with this one. Jerry

I bought new a 96 exploder eddie bauer. I loved it but in 2004? at 80K it was DEAD. I washed it and kept it clean, in the winter I paid for the good car washes whenever it was dirty. It rusted, paint peeled, Tranny was effed, then once it was paid off, the whole power steering system died to the tune of $1800. I had no choice but to take it to the dealer I purchased it from and traded it for an 02 with 18k. A much better design but now at 86K it too has trans trouble, AC wont work and its starting to rust and paint peel, goes through tires quickly imo, and generally a piece of sh*t, like the other one.

Dont get me wrong, Id love to drive one- I just wouldnt want to own one. Similar to how I wouldnt turn down a pull behind a Mastercraft

Yup, all the parts are gone. I got top dollar for the car, so I gave them to the guy who bought it (Chris91SE on max.org).

I can't stand the look of the new cadillac's, or really even the old ones, the only one I like at all is the CTS V, just basically because it's a 4door Corvette, but then i realize that i don't even like vette's, so that one's gone too. hahaha & if volvo's make you think ofsomeone smoking a pipe, caddy's have the same effect on me, but mroe along the lines of an old bluehaired lady weaving in & out of her lane b/c she can't see over the wheel.

I'll check out a few different cars before i get one, but even then, it's still at least a year or so off, I gotta finish school so i can go overpay for something i actually like..

You guy's and your Jap car "Kool Aid" make me want to puke! I have owned many Fords and GM's and have had good luck with all of them. Come on Timmy you know your going to get me going, is your boat a POS since it has a 351? No, Ford does not = poor quality any more than the Jap Mfr's!! Most all of the cars available today are pretty well built, foreign or domestic. My personal choice is to try very hard to support made in the USA by American Company's.

Here we go again...

2 things:

1. If my boat doesnt start, I cant go skiing- but it wont keep me from getting to work on Monday.

2. The Windsor was one of Ford's better designs (it was made for over 30 years). With a carb and an 8-wire engine harness, its simple enough for me to troubleshoot and fix myself.

Id say that Ford's motors are generally more reliable than the rest of the car, but they havent been problem free either (I know a half dozen people who had 3.8 V6's with head gasket problems).

In general, cars are more reliable today than ever before. The gap between Japanese and American quality is shrinking as well- which I am glad to see. Im not biased in my decsionmaking- I just want the best my money can buy. Check the reliabilty of the 4Runner vs. Explorer/Durango/Trailblazer/Grand Cherokee and let me know if I made a bad choice. My family has owned both American and domestic over the last 20 years, and our experience has been much better with our Nissans than the Dodges or Ford.

As much as i would love to argue with tim.....Those Damn Nissans, toyota's,honda's ect, ect last even when you beat the sh*t out of them....I'm a chevy/ford man myself and love all of the muscle car's....hell i grew up with one starting at age 16,,,,,but i drive a Nissan Frontier back and forth to work and use my 89 K5 Blazer Silverado for pulling the boat to the lake and pleasure.......Ford 312 motor in the boat and it never misses a lick.

Although my ford Ranger with the 2.9 v6 in it was still going strong with 400k on it when i sold it, so.......... well maybe i can argue with Ya tim.........

I dont think anyone is pushing "Japmobiles" here- Im certainly not. I could care less what you spend your money on!

All the cars that my family has owned received great maintenance- in general the Japanese vehicles were less problematic and lasted longer. Im glad youve had good luck with your Voyager, but we had 2 Caravans ('87 and '96) and they were both turds

I believe someone here (BKH?) made a good point not too long ago- Why is it that some people get patriotic when it comes to the type of vehicle they choose to drive? Is the same discrimination made with every purchase that you make? What kind of TV do you own? Where was the computer made that youre typing on right now?

Yeah definitely not "pushing japmobiles" by any means, but from the few cars I've owned to far & the numerous cars I've driven, I do tend to gravitate towards imports. And Are they really imports if they're made in plants in the US? How are they even considered Japmobiles then, except for their names...

And yes it can be tough to buy only Made in the USA but when it comes to a major purchase like a vehicle I will always drink the American "Tang".

BTW Nate, I think Tang is also Hollywoods GF's name.

when you spend 50gs on a car compared to 1000.00 on a tv, that effects the economy a little more

HAHAHA- nice one HWood

I'm pretty surprised that a brand loyal bunch like you all are not more brand loyal when it comes to cars/truck. Maybe I'm wrong.
I've always been a Ford truck fan. I've owned one since I was 16 and have always had very good luck.

Ken- glad your Mountaineer is treating you well. With proper maintenance it should last you quite a while longer.

Thanks, Brad. Yup, just had a nice synthetic oil change yesterday, my truck is happy.

On a better note, I took out my 8 cylinder Nautique this morning and it ran strong.
Installed a new oil sending switch and I'm good to go.

Not exactly the same engine, but the body style is close enough. My wife's 6 cyl 97 Exploder just cracked 260K miles with little more than regular oil changes and a tune up at 110K. Surely due for another one, but at this point, we're extremely curious how it will end. The little truck starts like clockwork, sounds pretty awful, and runs like a champ.

Pulling the boat with it is a little dicey, but we've even done that in a pinch or three.

With three growing boys and half their soccer team I like my Suburban. I was in Russia a few months ago and had the pleasure of driving around in a new Lada. About as basic as it gets. You could still do your own maintenance on one of these rides.

Tim, I think it was me who made that point.

I read in the paper the other day that Dodge is looking at importing a brand of small cars from China and sticking the Dodge name on them. (I was wondering to myself if they may be painted with lead paint like the toys imported by Matel...) They already assemble a majority of their cars in Mexico, heck, even their Hemi engine is built in Saltillo, Mexico.

While Dodge is looking for new and creative ways to cut jobs here in America,Toyota and Honda are creating jobs for Americans, building new plants in areas of our country that have been lacking jobs for years.

On the bright side, I read the other day that GM and Ford have seen a rise in sales for the last three years. Mostly attributed to the sale of cars overseas.

Check out this link:    http://www.cars.com/go/advice/Story.jsp?section=top&subject=ami&story=amMade0707 - Top ten USA Cars

Just as many Toyota as Ford and Chevy on the list.
