Thanks for the laughs. WAY too fast but I'm sure you figured that out. I'll post PLBC's first step out one of these days, it's great.

It would be cool to see pictures or videos of everyone's first time footing, skiing or boarding. Funny stuff.

Holy crap Ken, Where did you find a Nautique that could do 65 mph?

Excellent clip.

Yeah, my first attempt at stepping out was a disaster. Probably didn't step out until over a year later. Hollywood can throw a little compilation together.

I bought a converter by Dazzle at Best Buy, thanks to Kevin and Larry's advice. It cost around $50.00. I have a video tape that me and my buddies made in 1992 when I was 19 years young. I have plenty of more great shots to share.

I learned to foot off this particular Nautique. Any guesses on the year Nautique it is? I still see it on the lake today.

Brad, I'm counting the weeks until we're out there again. This year we'll share some boat hours. Got to get my new ACME 540 fixed soon.

Do you have this on tape? I'd love to see how you guys started off. Yeah, stepping off was a little freaky at the time. I never trusted that my foot would stay above the water. Now, I don't even think twice about it.

Yes it is already converted. I'll paint a little picture for you. I was on the handle off the boom in mid october. Placed one foot on surface of water, however proceeded to bring ski back behind my body before attempting to kick it off, you can see where it goes from there. I lost a contact and unzipped the barefoot suit without using my hands, woke up the next day and could barely move my lower back.

There are a bunch of good falls from all of us I'll throw on photobucket when I get a chance.

About 1986. Foggy, but very smooth morning out on the river. After a storm and some high water, so there was some floating debris from the shoreline. Barefooting down the river, saw a board but too late and hit it. Hurt pretty good. Reached down to rub out the pain and stuck my thumb into where my heel should have been. I had just about cut my heel off. There was a large nail, pointy end sticking up through the board and curved over. My heel was hanging off my foot like an old broken shutter. My friend picked me up, couple mile ride back to the ramp, loaded up the boat, then about a 30 minute ride into the hospital. For some reason it didn't bleed too much. Held it up high with a towel wrapped around it. 31 stitches later and a a couple days of intravenous antibiodics (it was a river not known for its cleanliness) and a couple weeks on crutches and I was as good as new. But don't let this discourage you from trying...

Great video. The side window looks similar to the one on the Martinique we used to have. I'll say early 70s.

Ken, I will say it's an '88. Unfortunately there is nothing in that video to distinguish it from an '87. '86 also had the ring/finger pylon.

Tim, I've tried the Print Screen Key and it never works, that is while watching something in Windows Media Player. I'm a$$uming you did this directly off of YouTube.

Edit: You edit faster than I do HW. I did do the printscreen right off YouTube, but it works for me on WMP as well:

Larry,

Reading that hurt's my feet! Fortunately we are on a pretty clean lake however still try to do a pa$$ to survey before any foot runs. Bigger problem is our kick ski's getting run over, one of my neighbor's (Mr Magoo) ran over the best kick ski we have ever had, still miss that ski!

The boat I learned on was a 1987 Ski Nautique. It was a pleasure to learn off of. We had many successful runs for years off that boat. I learned slalom off a 1982, SN 2001 when I was about 13. It's nice to have been surrounded by top quality ski boats growing up.

Gosh Ken, how young were you when those were taken? You look about 16!

HW: get those pics or vids of PLBC up here for all to enjoy.

Larry: I feel your pain, man. Hit a big ole sheephead just after a sweet grave-jump. Wasn't even looking where I was goin', to busy lookin' at our club dock to make sure everyone saw me. Still remember how bad it hurt. Lots of fish bones in the foot. We had a Doc in our club at the time and he cut me open to clean it out. Didn't get 'em all tho and boy did I get an infection and sick about 3 weeks later. Had to go and get the heel opened up again. Had to foot in a flip-flop taped to the foot for the summer. Boy those were the days!

Barefooting was always a real crowd pleaser in the old days. One day my buddies and I were out at the river, going back and forth in front of a small beach where a small group of people was sunning. When we went by, a young lady would hike up her shirt and shake her very ample bosoms at us.

We got quite cocky (pun intended) and decided it would not be at all out of line to say "Hey I barefoot, how about a B..J..."

I am sorry to say that is pretty much the whole story. And there is actually a sad addendum to it. I am blind as a bat and wear contacts. They had a way of washing out of my eyes when barefooting, so after losing a few, I went without. So I didn't see the lovely lady on the shoreline, but my friends in the boat did. When they came back to get me they said "DID YOU SEE THAT" To which I responded "see what?". We went by again, she apparently did it again. They came back to get me and again said "DID YOU SEE THAT". It sucks having bad eyes.

Working on the videos, I think most of them are converted, I will chop out the good wipes and post them through photobucket.

Hitting dead fish are our only obstacles really. Lake is pretty clean, could be safer and not be doing whips inside the bouy line, but that's a choice.

Had a minor foot injury Memorial Day of last summer, footed in a pair of dock shoes up until GL when I got the chance to ski with Scarpa that was my first real "barefooting" in a few weeks. It hurt like hell but well worth it.

Larry; Sometimes it is hard to believe how close our experiances are even tho we of course didn't know each other.

Remember when you knew EVERYONE in your area who could foot? Usually not to many names to remember. If you told someone at work or Church that you "barefooted" they would hardly believe you. The fun was in the proving!

Ken: Just do not believe you are 19 in that vid. Maybe 13 or 14. How long did you keep trying at that speed? Who was pullin' ya?

Yes, John, I was 19 in that video. I've changed slightly.

My friend Dan was pulling me. We put a lot of hours on that '87. He pulled me at 35-36 MPH. I don't know if that was too fast for my weight. Good times were had though.

Ive always been told that your weight, divided by 10, plus 20 will give you approximate boat speed for barefooting. Works for long line, as I like 38-39 at ~190 lbs. You can back off a few MPH on the boom, too. 30-31 would probably have been more than enough for your 128 lbs. With a higher boom, you can go even slower due to the upwards pull.

I can never view these videos from my work computer, must be a security setting I can't figure out. Anybody know what it could be? Joel????

Ken 39-40 should be your long line speed, drop 5 if your on the boom. I usually foot at 2 over my long line speed so I can lift a foot without digging in. Personally I would always rather be a little too fast than slow. Proper form and soft knees will let you ski a little slower too.

Thats why you kick up so much spray, ya gotta bend those knees. Bent knees give you a chance to; go slower, soak up rollers, and reduce headers.

Ken, he's right. However, Hollywood has a point- fixing your form and slowing down may have a detrimental effect on the quality of your videos.

Ken,

Pleeeeeeeze, go http://www.thefootersedge.com/youarefamous/index.htm - here and read everything, watch the videos, buy the DVD and then post some new vids for us.

It's been enjoyable watching the crash and burns but watching someone excel in barefooting is Almost as much fun.

Do what he says and you'll be a better footer the very next time you hit water.

Is there a problem with the quality of my home videos? As you say, Tim, I like it hot!

Ken,

I am once again inspired by your friend's back deep. For years and years (again with no one to teach me or for me to watch) I tried backwards barefooting. Tried back deeps (long line, I never had a boom) knee boards, stepping off, a few tries in the early 90s short line on a boom. Almost made it a couple times. Could never do it.   Gave up at that point. Right equipment and right opportunity, I still wouldn't mind giving it a try. Still not too old...yet...to achieve one more life goal. Don't Tim or Brad have a boom?

Yes, Larry, I know Brad has a boom. My buddy, Dan made back deep runs all the time. I have some great footage of him doing some long-line tumble-ups. Pretty cool stuff. You should stay at it, Larry.

Counting the days, Larry. Time to get the CCF step off ski sanded and painted.

The only clip you have of myself is a wipeout.   Tuesday I will throw some up. Jonny boy does an acrobatic maneuver when attempting a back deep and some other footin clips.

PLBC, you have only 1 wipeout, me and Johnny have multiple! We'll show them your skillz with the boom-to-rope trick. I didn't feel like chopping existing video last night, just put up what was already made.

The spray is real, will be getting the boom extension and possibly angling it more forward to get out of the way.

That will help a little but it's still murder, you should try the 81 some day, it's even worse. I get major bruises on my thigh from it.

Sorry, no video to show but I'm feeling every one of those face plants right along with you. I had video of one of the smoothest toe holds I've ever done ending in a cla$$ic eyelid peeler. That would have been good for a laugh but I think most of my archives got filed right along with my first wedding album.

Is it just the SN 2001's that kick that amount of spray or do they all do that? That's why I hate doing tumble-ups off the boom.

The spray has been reduced on each hull since the 2001. I havent put the boom on the '90 yet, but I dont remember the '92 being that bad.

Tim,

We should give your boat a try with a boom. A boom extention would help too, as stated by Hollywood. That spray is nasty on the body.

We'll just have to pick up an '07, 196 tomorrow, Tim. Your new truck would look great pulling it!

In the video I'm about to post tonight, you'll see exactly how the 90 spray is. It's not bad at all, breaking behind the skier. Never, ever had a problem with spray on that hull. The worst thing you'll see in my vids is my footing.

M3Fan - I don't think you'll look any worse than me. So the key here is a 90's and up hull to reduce spray. I'll have to tell my wife it's time to upgrade.

Here is the vid. Are you guys ready for this? This footage was shot in 2003 & 2004 with the 90 SN and the 99 Bu Sporty. Note there is footage of the wife in there, and the rest is of me. This is pre-helmet, pre-eardrum-blowouts, pre-slalom-course-addiction. All we did was foot constantly these years. What fun it is looking back at the vids. I hope you guys enjoy this- it took some time to get all the vids together.
