have a 2001 Nautique overheating (light comes on) under heavy load (i.e. pulling adult slalom skier. It "takes a while" for it to happen. Pulled a 120lb skier and all was well. replaced impeller (old one was not too worn) and briefly cranked engine...(LOTS of water), checked inlet to trans cooler (no blockage), cleaned strainer (between inlet on bottom of boat and trans cooler). replacing thermostat tomorrow but have to believe it opens as engine would overheat rather soon temp guage on dash reads correctly.. ideas??

This must be a 2001 with a carburetor otherwise when that light comes on, a fuel injected engine goes into SLOW mode and there's no mention of that happening The temperature gauge on the dash that "reads correctly", what does it read when the light comes on? |

The other possibility is an air leak on the intake hoses. If the hoses are not all sealed tight you can pull air rather than water and cause mystery overheat issues. Make sure all clamps are tight and all hoses do not have leaks. ------------- |

fuel injected. Yep, light comes on/audible horn blows, limp mode. We respond immediately to neutral and shutting off engine |

| hoses are old so will validate hose clamp connections. good suggestion..thank you |

DO you have a year model 2001? or a SN 2001. Could you post a pic or post engine type. I Think these little details matter. I originally read it as a 1980s 2001 but you said FI so thinking year model ------------- 1991 Ski Nautique (Previous)1984 Ski Nautique 2001 |

My bet is on either 1) an air leak since it’s fine when not under a heavy throttle 2) if gauge is reading around 160-180 when the light goes on it maybe the temp sensor. A temp gun shot around/on the temp sensor area could help with the diagnosis

An air leak in the plumbing will usually be overcome at speed, rather than exacerbated by it… but a leak at the pump itself would not. I’d be looking at a restriction or the pump if you can confirm the overheat is real. |
