I have a completely stock 1988 SN and the exhaust hoses are tired . When I replace them can I omit the mufflers and run the three inch hose from the manifold all the way to the through hull for the flapper ?
Thanks .

Many have done just that.  Be prepared for a louder boating experience.

Definitely louder.  You'll enjoy the rumble at the dock, and in general these boats just sound great.  My only comment is that while it's louder in the boat at speed, sometimes the place it's really louder is on shore.  So if you are 6 am skiers on a shoreline you might get a few comments.

Not that it's like those mufflers silence the boat, but they certainly take the edge off.

So are we talking obnoxiously loud here ? I had two concerns, I wasn’t sure if there would be some kind of back flow issue . And would removing the mufflers require me to teak anything with the motor since I kinda have it set right where I need it right now .

You won’t notice much tone difference, and the volume from the drivers seat won’t change much either. It’ll be a little louder from the rear seat. The biggest difference will be from shore, where it will be significantly louder- the older style mufflers seem to knock down how far the sound travels more than anything.

Considering the cost of 3” corrugated exhaust hose, I wouldn’t recommend it from a cost standpoint.

Interesting.
And yeah that’s a fair point , probably $400 in hose

Has anyone ever used Schedule 40 or 80 PVC pipe? Its light, cheap(er), and very durable. My exhaust hoses are 3" ID and 2.5" PVC has an OD of 2.875 which I would imagine would be close enough.

Not that I'm aware of.  PVC pipe turns into spaghetti with hot water flowing through it, even sch 80.  Hot water capable versions might fare better but I don't see them surviving hot exhaust/water temps.

Thats true, I wasn't sure how hot the exhaust temperatures/water are once they reach that part of the exhuast but it wouldn't be worth trying if there was any chance of them softening up and possibly letting water into the boat at the hose clamps.

Thanks .

I had a old nautique without mufflers, and It did sound mean. The sound level is substantial without them. Got countless questions on what engine mods were made; I think most didn't realize it was only the mufflers. It really was cool for awhile, but soon became a irritant. Passengers didn't like it; they couldnt hear each other, it interfered with skiing and it disturbed residents along the shore. Not trying to sway you either way, I'm only sharing my experience. 'Course then, maybe I'm just getting too old.😀
