Topic: Restoring CorrectCraftFan.com
Posted By: Keith
Subject: Restoring CorrectCraftFan.com
Date Posted: August-05-2020 at 6:12pm
As was announced on Facebook earlier this week, CorrectCraftFan.com was on a virtual private server (VPS) that was attacked by Ransomware on July 7th, 2020. It's unclear if CCF was the catalyst of the attack or if it was one of 1,000's of other sites being hosted. Regardless, CCF was a victim and the site went down and has been down for the past 29 days.

Unfortunately, the data on our server was corrupted and we were at the mercy of external resources to restore our server. This problem has been further compounded by the COVID pandemic and a reduced staff dealing with the issue.

At this point, we are back up and running on a new server through a different provider. I have been able to migrate all the data from the Forums and Diaries databases. However, the image files are not yet recovered. The Diaries and For Sale images are still missing, along with some of the files from the Reference section.

We are working to restore those files and although they are not yet available. I'm holding out hope that we will be able to restore those as well.

Nothing like this has happened before in the past 17 years that we have been running CorrectCraftFan.com. Although the site was backed up regularly, I did not have a full copy of the site backed up to a different server.

Hind sight is 20/20 and, needless to say, we will be making significant changes to the backup procedures going forward.

This event has been very difficult for us and we are doing everything possible to resort the site to it's former glory.

While vising the site during this restoration process, please be patient with missing images, reference files or any other 'error' you may encounter.

Thank you,
Keith

Well I for one thank you for all you do behind the scenes. That said I think now would be a good time for many of us to make a donation to help out....

As I posted in the other thread:

So glad we have CCfan back. Thanks Keith. I’m sure it’s been frustrating for you as well as many members.

Without my daily CCfan fix, my anxiety level has been overwhelming to the point of getting heart palpitations! I almost called the paramedics to haul me in but decided to leave the hospital space for more important issues like the Covid problem. Well really, I’m doing just fine but sure did miss logging on every day.

With the server problems, a thought crossed my mind. It’s been a while since we have discussed it, but I feel it’s time for a general fund raiser. People, keep in mind CCfan is pretty much up to Keith to keep it going so I’m sure any help is appreciated. Click on the “contribute” at the bottom. I’m sending mine in.

Keith.... I think after 29 days of CCFan sobriety we all realized how much we love and appreciate this site and when it's down we all freak out because we cannot get our CCFan fix. You know its pretty bad when you're one of the "Senior" members around here and I get bombarded with texts and FB messenger msgs asking about whats up with the site.
All being said and has other CCFans have mentioned. Keith we appreciate ALL that you do and we all suffered a bit of depression not being able to access the fan. I think this is a hard reminder that we all should throw a few bucks your way because like the Correct Crafts we ALL drive........The site doesn't run on "Thanks". We all should donate money to make sure we keep this site running. It's so awesome to see it back!!!!

+1 to everything said. Cant believe how I have missed my morning cruise thru the topics and questions on CCF. and my concern as the days went by that the information stored on this site would be gone forever.
Nothing , I'm to what you have been going thru Keith dealing with its recovery. I have been thru a couple of web sites I manage that have been hacked.
My donation is on its way.

I donated yesterday but I have been thinking,  why not impose a fee to join this forum?  Many boat owners CC or not come here for solutions and then check out till they break again.
Maybe add a $50 upfront fee to join.  It could help the forum survive.

I notice this forum still uses the HTTP prefix, in business today they warn you not to visit sites with the old HTTP because they are less secure, we are told HTTPS sites are safer?  Is there a way to upgrade?   I don’t understand how they work so I ask out of ignorance but to share what our company pushed on us who used company computers.

It is great to have it back.
Thank You

I know of other forums where there is an upfront fee for joining.  $25 upfront for a one year membership, $50 for 5 years or $100 for lifetime membership.   Not sure how all this works financially but obviously it takes someones time to make this work and most reports say Keith is doing the heavy lifting.   Could this be established as a not profit business?

Hi Pete,
Unfortunately, at this point we should consider all the photos lost.

Steps have been taken to make sure this does not happen again, including daily backups to AWS but there is nothing we can do for the images that have been lost.

Thanks,
Keith
