New owner of an 82 SN here. Trying my best to learn as much as I can so that I can perform my own maintenance on my new (to me) ride. You guys are the source so here's to hoping you can help me out. The first thing that jumped out to me on my 351 is that there is a hose coming out of the fuel pump that I 'think' should go to the flame arrestor on the carb, but instead some liberties were taken. It appears an after market air filter was added and I have no idea where this hose should go. It currently dead ends with a shop rag electrical taped to the hose. Clearly this is not the proper application. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to fix this? Should I be concerned with how its currently configured? have put about 10 hours on it since I bought the boat 2 weeks ago. In love with these old CCs! Thanks in advance.

Adam that hose should go to the flame arrestor on the carb. and you are correct that is just a air filter on there now. So you need to buy a marine Flame arrestor. I would fix it ASAP the way it is set up now if your fuel pump fails it could pump raw gas into your boat.

First, welcome to CCfan and ownership of the 2001.

Yes, you should have a flame arrester and not an air filter. The PO did some "back yarding" that is now a potential danger. If you can, ask the seller where the flame arrester is and if he still has it, get it back on the engine. The hose from the fuel pump to the flame arrester is another safety feature. If the fuel pump ruptures the internal diaphragm, then extra fuel is pumped up to the engine and not into the bilge where it would be a big problem. The line is typically clear so you can see if there's fuel in it.

Wow, ok. Now I'm so glad i asked. I reached out to the PO and he does not have the flame arrestor so now I'm looking to replace it with a new one. Does it appear that i would just need a new flame arrestor and hose?

Thank you so much for the help! I ordered from skidim, who happen to live down the road from me so hopefully i can pick it up soon. they also advised to purchase the clear hose, product # 92512 if anyone else encounters a MacGruber situation like this. PO is a POS btw so no way I'm getting a new one out of him

Welcome aboard Adam,
It looks like more of the same with the red hose. That leads from the oil breather cap and should also connect to a fitting on the flame arrestor.

What Pete says is no understatement: the flame arrestor is correctly named.

Yes what Brian said on the red hose. That's why there are two spots for hoses on the flame arrester. One for the fuel pump and the other for the crankcase vent via the breather on the valve cover. Where is the red hose connected now? If it does go to the intake manifold, then it may be OK?

Can't thank everyone enough for your insight. you might have saved a life. like i mentioned, i ordered the flame arrestor and clear tube. heres a pick of where the red tube goes, what would go to the other open hose outlet on the arrestor? is that where the red tube should go? learning curve is steep right now.

Adam,
There are two hose fittings on the arrester you bought. The larger one is for the crankcase vent (the red hose) and the smaller one is for the fuel pump safety overflow. where you will be using the clear line. The black hose you have now, just gets' removed.

Gotcha, so what about where the red tube is currently going? why would someone do this in the first place
