I may need to put my boat on a lift. I am deathly afraid that my kids or I will misalign the boat and take out the tracking fins and running gear. Plus, I am on the choppy part of the Lake, which makes even docking a challenge. I need a bombproof, idiot proof system to keep the boat centered. Do the load guides for the Sunstream lifts work well enough? Are there any other brands and systems you would suggest?

Jim,
Any brand will work as long as the bunks and guides are set up properly and for an inboard. Shy away from a dealer who doesn't handle inboards. Also, ask to see one of the lifts in the water with an inboard on it.

The bunks will naturally center the front of the boat as the cradle raises and the boat can only move so far side to side anyway in the lift itself so I'm not sure how rational this fear of messing the boat up is. The prop is well away from the lifting cradle and the tracking fins shouldn't even be able to touch either crossmember.
You might want to think about a bowstop to prevent overrunning of the lift.
I put a little piece of tape around the lifting cable so that folks know how much the lift needs to go down relative to the water line.

Hello Jim,
I agree with these guys - all lifts come with various optional setups for bunks and guides they can be expensive options but set up correctly going into and out of a lift should be as easy or easier than docking. My young nephews will pull boats in and out of lifts all day but won't go near a dock on a windy day.

One note of caution, if the brand you choose uses carpeted side bunks, like my shorestation has, you need to be really careful if they are at the same height as your side lettering/decals when coming in.
The side steps are nice to have as a step in/out of the boat however IMO guidepoles on a lift are probably a better option and won't be in the way when wiping the boat down.
