Is there a simple way to troubleshoot a Commander alternator with voltage regulator? The boat has a new battery and the amp gauge either reads right on zero or slightly discharging. We've got another engine we could swap parts from, but I'm wondering if a multi meter can be used for a simple test?

Bruce,
You can also check voltage. When the ammeter is showing a discharge which shouln't happen when the engine is running, see what you are getting at the battery.
