I have a 92 Ski, with 560 hours. Experiencing cut outs at 2200 - 2600 rpms....motor is tight, so I am leaning to electrical issues...recently learned that this vintage had problems with the distributor, plug thingy where are the plugs go to toward the rear of the motor(don't know the name of this thing). Local shop said that they will remove distrib, the black thingy, and rewire with a new set-up, that is after market. Anyone familiar with this issue with earkt 1990's Ski Nauty's?

Baffled.....Thank you!

The thingy is called Pro-tec ignition system. I just fixed mine that was doing the same thing, but mine was a simple loose ground connection. Hopefully yours is just as simple, but start with all the electrical connections. Clean them all and reassemble with dielectric grease. Pay particular attention to cleaning the grounds.

FWIW: 2500rpm is the maximum limp mode engine speed which will feel like "cut-outs". Low oil pressure or high engine temperatures cause limp mode. Also, faulty sensor for one or the other can cause limp mode. Disconnecting the electrical wires to both sensor can help determine if sensor(s) are faulty since this will prevent the sensors from grounding the signal wire.
